The effect of grain size on deformation modes and deformation heterogeneity in a rolled Mg-Zn-Ca alloy

Haoge Shou et al.

Summary: Grain refinement has been found to enhance the strength and ductility of Mg alloy by promoting the activation of non-basal slip. In this study, the effect of grain size on deformation modes and heterogeneity and its relationship to crystallographic orientation were investigated. The experimental results showed that decreasing grain size increased the yield strength and elongation, with a greater effect observed in the rolling direction.

Simulation-aided analysis on mechanical properties of dilute Mg-Zn-Ca alloy sheets

Yusuke Matsuoka et al.

Summary: The relationship between Zn content and room temperature mechanical properties of dilute Mg-xZn-0.1Ca alloy sheets was investigated. Increasing the Zn content resulted in a significant improvement in the formability. The relative activity of deformation modes did not show apparent differences between different Zn contents. The appearance of tilted basal poles and the development of TD-split texture contributed to the enhanced formability. The efficient scheme for parameter fitting required for VPSC simulation was proposed.

Spheroiding and refining of coarse CaMgSn phase in Mg-Al-Sn-Ca alloys for simultaneously improved strength and ductility via sub-rapid solidification and controlled rolling

Min Zha et al.

Summary: A novel Mg-4.5Al-1.5Sn-0.5Ca alloy with high mechanical properties was produced via sub rapid solidification and controlled rolling. The morphology of CaMgSn phase changed from long-rod to refined spherical/quasi-spherical through the processing strategy proposed in this study. The alloy exhibited impressive strength (yield strength of approximately 275 MPa and ultimate tensile strength of approximately 338 MPa) and ductility (elongation of approximately 20%) due to the formation of dispersed nano-sized CaMgSn precipitates.

Microstructure Evolution of Mg-Sn-Y Alloy Solidified under High Pressure and Temperature Gradient

Chunming Zou et al.

Summary: The microstructures of Mg-1Sn-2.5Y alloys solidified under high pressures were analyzed, and a mathematical model was established to investigate the effects of solidification pressure and cooling rate on the grain size. The results showed that increasing pressure and cooling rate led to a reduction in average grain size.

The evolution of coarse grains and its effects on weakened basal texture during annealing of a cold-rolled magnesium AZ31B alloy

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The nucleation and grain growth of 34 coarse grains were tracked using a quasi-in-situ EBSD method. Most grains did not have a basal orientation, and no preferential grain growth or special types of grain boundaries were observed. Nine coarse grains nucleated from deformed grain boundaries, mainly within dislocation cells or subgrains in deformed grain interiors. The growth behavior of these grains can be explained by abnormal subgrain growth rarely reported in Mg alloys. The coarse basal grains did not show any growth advantage compared to other non-basal grains, resulting in a weak basal texture in the AZ31B alloy.

Summary: This study designed a Mg-4Sn-2.3La-0.68Ca alloy with equal atomic ratio of Sn/(La + Ca) and regulated its microstructure by ultrasonic treatment and heat treatment. The results showed that ultrasonic treatment can refine the primary and eutectic phases and simultaneously improve the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the alloy; heat treatment can modify the eutectic morphology and further enhance the thermal conductivity of the alloy.

Summary: The study focused on developing wrought Mg-based alloy TZ73 for automotive applications, which has high strength and reasonable elongation-to-failure without expensive Rare-Earth elements. The alloy's high strength is attributed to solid solution strengthening and fine grain size, with annealing leading to increased elongation-to-failure.
