Half-Heusler phase TmNiSb under pressure: intrinsic phase separation, thermoelectric performance and structural transition

Kamil Ciesielski et al.

Summary: The Half-Heusler (HH) phase TmNiSb was obtained by arc-melting combined with high-pressure high temperature sintering. The samples maintained the HH structure within pressing temperatures of 20-750 °C, but intrinsic phase separation was observed. The material divided into three phases: stoichiometric TmNiSb, nickel deficient phase TmNi1-xSb, and thulium-rich phase Tm(NiSb)(1-y). The electrical resistivity of HH samples with phase separation showed non-degenerate behavior.

Enhancement in the thermoelectric performance of ZrNiSn-based alloys through extra Zr-rich nanoprecipitates with superstructures

Ruonan Min et al.

Summary: Adjusting the composition of half-Heusler alloys to deviate from stoichiometry can generate numerous full-Heusler nano-sized precipitates, which is an effective method to improve thermoelectric performance. However, controlling the size and shape of these precipitates is challenging, limiting the substantial enhancement of thermoelectric properties.

Mechanistic Insights into the Formation of Thermoelectric TiNiSn from In Situ Neutron Powder Diffraction

Sonia A. Barczak et al.

Summary: In situ neutron powder diffraction was used to monitor the synthesis of TiNiSn alloys from elemental powders, revealing the complex sequence of reactions and the impact of excess Ni. The formation of half-Heusler and full-Heusler phases was found to be influenced by melting events and the presence of molten phases. The study provides important insights into the formation mechanism of TiNiSn and its implications for synthetic design and thermoelectric transport analysis.

Enhanced Thermoelectric Properties of Zr0.85-xHfxNb0.15-yTayCoSb Medium-Entropy Alloys: Tradeoff between What to Alloy and How Much to Alloy

Rongchun Chen et al.

Summary: Configurational entropy is considered a gene-like performance indicator for thermoelectric materials, but increasing configurational entropy alone does not guarantee a high thermoelectric figure of merit. Therefore, it is necessary to determine protocols for designing medium-and high-entropy thermoelectric materials with high ZT values. In this study, a strategy for designing high ZT n-type ZrCoSb-based medium-entropy half-Heusler alloys is provided, highlighting the tradeoff between alloy composition and amount. The developed design concept enables the medium-entropy half-Heusler alloy to exhibit a high peak ZT of approximately 0.57.

Coupling of electronic transport and defect engineering substantially enhances the thermoelectric performance of p-type TiCoSb HH alloy

Ajay Kumar Verma et al.

Summary: The thermoelectric performance of p-type TiCoSb-based compounds can be enhanced by a combined approach of tuning the electronic properties and defect engineering. Alloying with Fe and Zr leads to an overall increase in the peak ZT value, while further adjusting the hole concentration with Sn doping leads to an additional increase in ZT.

Conduction band engineering of half-Heusler thermoelectrics using orbital chemistry

Shuping Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the n-type orbital phase diagram of 69 HH compounds and finds that there are two competing conduction bands at the same X point in the Brillouin zone that can be engineered to be converged. By mixing HH compounds with reverse band offsets, the strategy to achieve conduction band convergence is demonstrated through alloying VCoSn and TaCoSn, leading to a predicted solid solution with high conduction band convergence and significantly larger density-of-states effective mass. Analyzing the orbital character of band edges provides new insight into engineering the thermoelectric performance of HH compounds.

In this study, the electronic structure and thermoelectric transport properties of half-Heusler TiCoSb single crystals were analyzed using ARPES. It was found that there is high degeneracy in the valence bands, which provides opportunities for improving the thermoelectric performance of TiCoSb. Additionally, the presence of interstitial defects near the valence band was ruled out using HAXPES.
