Biospeckle Optical Coherence Tomography (bOCT) in the Speedy Assessment of the Responses of the Seeds of Raphanus sativus L. (Kaiware Daikon) to Acid Mine Drainage (AMD)

Danyang Li et al.

Summary: Mining plays a crucial role in global socio-economic development, but acid mine drainage (AMD) causes significant pollution and affects agricultural fields. To monitor the effects of AMD on plants and understand their potential in phytoremediation, the use of biospeckle Optical Coherence Tomography (bOCT) was proposed. The study investigated the response of Kaiware daikon seeds to simulated AMD at two different concentrations. The results showed that bOCT images provided clear distinctions between different AMD treatments within a short time, making it a rapid and non-invasive technique for screening suitable plants in AMD phytoremediation applications.

Effects of microplastics on lentil (Lens culinaris) seed germination and seedling growth

Y. Sanath K. De Silva et al.

Summary: The widespread use and mishandling of plastics have led to severe environmental issues, impacting seed germination and seedling growth. This study used Biospeckle Optical Coherence Tomography (bOCT) to investigate the effect of polyethylene microplastics (PEMPs) on lentil seed germination and seedling growth. The results showed that PEMP presence significantly reduced internal activity during the initial stages of germination.
