Unsteady Flamelet modeling study on OMEx-type fuels under Engine Combustion Network Spray A conditions

Jesus Benajes et al.

Summary: Poly-Oxymethylene Dimethyl Ethers (OMEx) are synthetic and potentially-renewable fuels that can significantly reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions and soot emissions. Computational studies show that both OMEx and OME1 fuels have similar ignition timings to the reference fuel n-dodecane, and ignition in spray calculations occurs on the lean side. The modeling approach predicts most combustion metrics and temperatures for both fuels.

Effect of piston geometry on combustion characteristics of CI engine used Sal seed oil

Ilker Temizer et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of piston bowl geometry on reducing soot emissions, improving combustion, and in-cylinder flow movements in a direct injection diesel engine. Computational Fluid Dynamics program was used to analyze the combustion, flow, and emission process. The results show that directing the MCC type fuel according to SCC type leads to higher turbulence velocity distribution, better mixture fraction values, and lower soot formation distribution. The highest heat release rates were obtained with B10 blended fuel used at the SCC type combustion chamber.

Evaluation of strategies to optimize engine efficiency and NOx emissions with the synthetic diesel fuel oxymethylene ether

Simon Poellmann et al.

Summary: The use of CO2-neutral synthetic fuels in internal combustion engines helps achieve climate goals. Current research focuses on reducing pollutant emissions and improving combustion efficiency. Soot-free combustion of oxymethylene ether (OME) as a synthetic diesel fuel can significantly reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. Various in-engine measures, such as increasing exhaust gas recirculation, lowering rail pressure, adjusting valve timing, and increasing compression ratio, can effectively reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and improve efficiency.

Additive manufacturing new piston design and injection strategies for highly efficient and ultra-low emissions combustion in view of 2030 targets

Gabriele Di Blasio et al.

Summary: Internal combustion engines have been the most effective solution for mobility, but further technology and fuel developments are still needed to meet upcoming emission regulations. Recent studies have focused on ultra-low emissions and efficiency, as well as carbon-neutral fuels. This research assesses the effectiveness of a steel piston with an innovative bowl shape, and shows that it can significantly reduce soot emissions and achieve ultra-low NOx levels compared to conventional combustion systems.

Effect of PODE on Emission Characteristics of a China VI Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine

Yanju Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of blending polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether (PODE) with diesel fuel on the emission characteristics of a China VI diesel engine. The results show that blending PODE can significantly reduce CO and THC emissions, as well as particle number concentration. Increasing the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) rates can improve NOx emissions, but there is a trade-off relationship between particle number (PN) and NOx emissions.

Numerical Optimization of the EGR Rate and Injection Timing with a Novel Cavitation Model in a Diesel Engine Fueled with PODE/Diesel Blends

Yanju Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the combustion and emission characteristics of PODE/diesel blends in diesel engines through simulation. The results show that the self-restoring oxygen properties of PODE can improve combustion efficiency but also increase NOx emissions. Increasing the blending ratio can reduce soot emissions. Optimizing the injection timing can reduce NOx emissions, while delaying the injection timing can reduce soot emissions. Increasing the EGR rate can control NOx emissions, but excessive EGR rate increases soot emissions.

Effects of Piston Bowl Geometry on Combustion and Emissions of a Four-Stroke Heavy-Duty Diesel Marine Engine

Van Chien Pham et al.

Summary: The geometry of the piston bowl has a significant impact on the combustion and emissions of the engine. The study found that the omega-type and re-entrant piston bowls improved cylinder power, reduced fuel consumption, and NO emissions compared to the U-type bowl. However, changing the piston bowl type had negligible effects on soot and CO2 emissions.

Combustion Study of Polyoxymethylene Dimethyl Ethers and Diesel Blend Fuels on an Optical Engine

Jingjing He et al.

Summary: Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (PODE) are a newly emerged oxygenated alternative that can greatly reduce soot emissions from diesel engines. In this study, the combustion characteristics of PODE and diesel blends were investigated under various injection timings and pressures using an optical engine. The results showed that increasing the PODE ratio in the blends decreased ignition delay and combustion duration, but also led to a reduction in heat release rate, cylinder pressure and temperature due to the lower heating value of PODE. Moreover, the addition of PODE in diesel significantly reduced both natural flame luminosity and soot formation, with a 20% PODE blend showing the best overall combustion and soot reduction characteristics.

Summary: The study found that blended fuel with PODE3-4 has better spray characteristics than pure diesel at low temperatures, with an increase in injection pressure leading to increased vapor phase penetration distance and cone angle, and decreased Sauter mean diameter. As ambient temperature increased, the vapor phase projection area and cone angle of the blended fuel increased while SMD decreased.
