The last 50 years of organic contamination of a highly anthropized tributary of the Po River (Italy)

Luigi Vigano et al.

Summary: This study examined the temporal profiles of many organic micropollutants in a sediment core from the Lambro River, a highly anthropized tributary of the Po River. The sediment core revealed a 50-year historical record of chemical contamination discharged into the Lambro and Po Rivers. The highest risks to aquatic organisms were associated with high levels of various pollutants, with environmental legislation and improved wastewater treatments leading to recent downward trends.

The comprehensive impact of phosphorus sources on microalgae biochemical metabolism and phosphorus transformation

Dongxu Xing et al.

Summary: Understanding the impact of phosphorus sources on microalgae growth is crucial for cultivating microalgae. Both inorganic phosphorus and organic phosphorus can be absorbed and utilized by Chlorella pyrenoidosa. The maximum dry cell weight was achieved when the IP/OP ratio was 1:3, which was higher than other combinations. The increase in OP proportion was beneficial for microalgae growth but disadvantageous for lipid accumulation. The use of 31P NMR spectroscopy provided valuable insights into phosphorus metabolism and transformation in microalgae.

The northern Adriatic circulation regimes in the future winter climate

Natalija Dunic et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the classification of winter characteristics in the Northern Adriatic (NAd) and predicts the future changes in climate. The study evaluates the usage of climate models in this classification and determines the best proxy index for describing the winter characteristics. The results show that the number of neutral circulation types will increase in the future climate, while the number of type A and type B circulations will decrease, which may have a significant impact on the productivity of the region.

Phytoplankton communities in a coastal and offshore stations of the northern Adriatic Sea approached by network analysis and different statistical descriptors

Francesca Neri et al.

Summary: This study compared two long-term phytoplankton time series in the Northern Adriatic Sea and found that the coastal station was more variable and influenced by the Western Adriatic Current and riverine inputs. The offshore phytoplankton community showed higher biodiversity due to its more oligotrophic condition. Graph-network analysis was a useful tool to study the phytoplankton community. Evaluating the Good Environmental Status should consider oceanographic differences and use multiple statistical approaches.

North Adriatic Dense Water: lessons learned since the pioneering work of Mira Zore-Armanda 60 years ago

Ivica Vilibic et al.

Summary: This review first pays tribute to the famous Croatian oceanographer, Mira Zore-Armanda, and her seminal work on the Adriatic water masses in 1963, and emphasises the importance of the densest Mediterranean water mass: North Adriatic Dense Water (NAddW). It then reviews the physics and temporal evolution of NAddW, discussing its influence on the Adriatic-Ionian thermohaline circulation, oxygen and carbon transport, and its response to climate change. Furthermore, the importance of long-term observations and atmosphere-ocean modelling in studying the NAddW is highlighted, along with identified gaps and possibilities for future research.

Morpho-physiological adaptations of Leptocylindrus aporus and L. hargravesii to phosphate limitation in the northern Adriatic

Natasa Kuzat et al.

Summary: The northern Adriatic is a productive and shallow area with multiple gradients. It is influenced by freshwater inputs, especially from the Po river. This study focuses on the morphological and physiological responses of two Leptocylindrus species to phosphate limitation. In vitro experiments showed similar morphological reactions but significant physiological differences between the species.

Summary: This study monitored the impact of wastewater discharge and rainfall events on water quality in the western Adriatic coast of Italy. The results show that excessive wastewater and faecal bacteria can contaminate rivers and coastal areas, with recovery times varying between 24 and 72 hours.

Phytoplankton Pigments Reveal Size Structure and Interannual Variability of the Coastal Phytoplankton Community (Adriatic Sea)

Vesna Flander-Putrle et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the annual and interannual variability of phytoplankton biomass in different size classes in the Gulf of Trieste. The results showed that nano and micro fractions coexisted during the spring peak and microplankton dominated during the autumn peak. The study also found significant correlations between phytoplankton taxa and size classes and temperature, nitrate and nitrite.

Long-term dynamics of annual and seasonal physical and biogeochemical properties: Role of minor river discharges in the North-western Adriatic coast

Fabio Ricci et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the dynamics of physical and biogeochemical properties in a temperate coastal area in the north-western Adriatic Sea. The results showed that the inputs from minor rivers and ecological processes played a role in the interannual and seasonal biogeochemical dynamics. The study also found a trend towards more oligotrophic conditions, mainly due to reduced phosphate and nitrate loadings from the minor rivers and increased freshwater discharges.

Summary: Through analyzing long-term time series data, this study examined the phytoplankton assemblage structure and its influence by seasonal and environmental factors in the coastal areas of Northwestern Adriatic Sea in Italy. The diatom group was identified as the main component of the phytoplankton assemblage, with various species showing distinct distribution patterns based on different seasons and years, with some species being influenced by long-term trends and exhibiting an increasing frequency.

Extreme Flooding Events in Coastal Lagoons: Seawater Parameters and Rainfall over A Six-Year Period in the Mar Menor (SE Spain)

Mariana Machado Toffolo et al.

Summary: Climate change is a major problem affecting ecosystems worldwide, and coastal lagoons are particularly vulnerable. The Mar Menor, the largest saltwater lagoon in Europe, experienced climate change-induced flooding events in 2016 and 2019, which temporarily altered the lagoon's oceanographic properties. Analysis of data collected from 2016 to 2021 showed changes in seawater parameters, with some parameters taking longer to recover than others. Rainfall correlated with changes in turbidity and chlorophyll-a values, while turbidity correlated with chlorophyll-a and oxygen saturation, and density correlated with salinity. Comprehensive management plans are necessary to address anthropic impacts and slow down ecosystem decline.

Ecological Importance of Alkaline Phosphatase Activity in Changing Marine Environmental Conditions

Ingrid Ivancic et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of changing hydrological and climatic conditions on phosphorus dynamics in the Northern Adriatic Sea (NA), finding that alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) response to P stress varied under different temperature conditions. The highest APA occurred during riverine nutrient supply, indicating that changes in anthropogenic nutrient loads may strongly impact P status in the coastal system. Predicted increases in winter sea temperature and summer Po River discharge could potentially prolong periods of P limitation.
