Integrated culture and harvest systems for improved microalgal biomass production and wastewater treatment

Kai-Xuan Huang et al.

Summary: Cultivating microalgae in wastewater is an environmentally sustainable approach, but commercial application is challenging due to low biomass output and high harvesting costs. Integrated culture and harvest systems, such as microalgae biofilm and membrane photobioreactor, have been explored to efficiently couple microalgal biomass production with wastewater purification. These systems allow for higher microalgae concentration and more efficient harvesting, improving biomass production and wastewater treatment efficiency.

Technologies for harvesting the microalgae for industrial applications: Current trends and perspectives

Zhiyong Liu et al.

Summary: Microalgae are being recognized as a promising source for meeting global demands sustainably. However, the high energy consumption for harvesting is a major obstacle. This review provides an overview of microalgae harvesting technologies, focusing on the latest advances in flocculation techniques. These methods have been applied in biodiesel production, food processing, nutraceuticals, and wastewater treatment. Large-scale harvesting faces challenges due to high costs, but cost-effective strategies such as resource utilization and extracellular polymeric substance-induced flocculation technology can be explored for efficient microalgal harvesting.

Insight into the rapid biogranulation for suspended single-cell microalgae harvesting in wastewater treatment systems: Focus on the role of extracellular polymeric substances

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that the liquid fraction from crushed microalgae granules (AddL) contributes to rapid aggregation and efficient harvesting of microalgae during the solid-liquid separation process. This method can achieve harvesting efficiency of over 90%, providing a new approach for the practical application of microalgae in wastewater treatment.

Small peptide glutathione-induced bioflocculation for enhancing the food application potential of Chlorella pyrenoidosa

Nahui Hao et al.

Summary: In this study, a small peptide-induced bioflocculation technique was developed for harvesting microalgae, resulting in biomass free of impurities. The treated biomass showed higher protein and lipid content, as well as increased levels of essential amino acids and omega polyunsaturated fatty acids. This study provides novel insights into residue-free algal harvesting and the production of nutrition-enriched biomass.

Mixotrophic Growth of Chlorella sorokiniana on Acetate and Butyrate: Interplay Between Substrate, C:N Ratio and pH

Julien Lacroux et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of acetate or butyrate concentration on biomass growth rates and yields in microalgae cultivation on waste dark fermentation effluents. While adjusting initial pH can mitigate VFA inhibition, VFA concentration strongly affects biomass yields. High organic acid concentration may reduce carbon fixation by autotrophy, leading to decreased yields.
