Robotic Technology in Foot and Ankle Surgery: A Comprehensive Review

Taylor P. Stauffer et al.

Summary: Recent developments in robotic technologies in the orthopaedic surgery field have mainly focused on high-volume arthroplasty procedures, neglecting the potential for robotic applications in foot and ankle surgery. This paper summarizes past and current developments in foot and ankle robotics and discusses the outcomes associated with these interventions. The future direction should be to incorporate robotics specifically into surgical procedures and personalize machinery to individual patients in order to improve perioperative and post-operative outcomes.

Towards Biomechanics-Aware Design of a Steerable Drilling Robot for Spinal Fixation Procedures with Flexible Pedicle Screws

Susheela Sharma et al.

Summary: To reduce the failure rate of spinal fixation surgeries in osteoporotic patients, a biomechanically-aware framework for designing a concentric tube steerable drilling robot (CT-SDR) is proposed. The framework utilizes a patient-specific finite element biomechanics model based on Quantitative Computed Tomography scans to calculate an optimal and feasible drilling and implantation trajectory. The CT-SDR is designed and evaluated based on the output of the biomechanics model, ensuring a balance between flexibility and strength to recreate the drilling trajectory with minimal errors.

Collaborative Preoperative Planning for Operation-Navigation Dual-Robot Orthopedic Surgery System

Yanding Qin et al.

Summary: In this paper, a operation-navigation dual-robot collaborative system is proposed for orthopedic surgeries. An extra navigation robot is introduced to actively adjust the observation pose of the optical tracking system (OTS). A collaborative preoperative planning method is formulated to find the optimal poses of the OTS for each osteotomy plane. Compared with fixed OTS, active navigation ensures all the targets within the measurement volume (MV) throughout the surgery.

Performance analysis of biodegradable materials for orthopedic applications

Muzamil Hussain et al.

Summary: Metal-based and polymer-based biodegradable materials have gained significant attention in orthopedic applications due to their good biocompatibility, biodegradability, and mechanical properties that are closer to bone. It is important to control and predict the degradation behavior of these materials, as it affects their physical and mechanical properties. Various techniques such as material processing optimization, alloying, and surface modifications have been employed to optimize their properties.
