High gradient off-axis coupled C-band Cu and CuAg accelerating structures

Mitchell Schneider et al.

Summary: We report the high gradient testing results of two single-cell off-axis coupled standing wave accelerating structures. The results showed that the peak surface electric fields achieved in the pure copper structure and the copper-silver alloy structure were 450 MV/m and 25% higher at 554 MV/m, respectively, after optimizing the cavity geometry. These findings suggest that C-band accelerating structures can operate at peak fields similar to those at higher frequencies while providing a larger beam iris for improved beam transport.

Experimental demonstration of particle acceleration with normal conducting accelerating structure at cryogenic temperature

Mamdouh Nasr et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental demonstration of high-gradient operation of an X-band linear accelerator at liquid nitrogen temperature, showing enhanced performance at low temperatures including increased yield strength, reduced surface resistance, and improved rf-to-beam efficiency. Measurements confirmed the accelerator's improved parameters at cryogenic temperatures, with electron beam acceleration reaching up to 150 MV/m and breakdown rates significantly reduced compared to room temperature operation.

High-gradient rf tests of welded X-band accelerating cavities

V. A. Dolgashev et al.

Summary: Linacs for high-energy physics, industry, and medicine require compact, robust, and cost-effective accelerating structures. High-accelerating gradients are needed for small foot-print linacs. Recent experiments show that hard copper alloys achieve better high-gradient performance compared to soft copper. Welding is shown to be a viable, robust, and low-cost alternative for high-gradient operation.
