Monitoring and analysis of ground subsidence in Shanghai based on PS-InSAR and SBAS-InSAR technologies

Zhihua Zhang et al.

Summary: Shanghai is prone to land subsidence due to its unique geology and human activities. Traditional methods for monitoring subsidence are inadequate due to their time-consuming and costly nature. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology provides a low-cost and efficient solution for monitoring large areas. In this study, InSAR was used to monitor subsidence in Shanghai over the past 2 years, revealing uneven ground subsidence characterized by settlement funnels in the urban area. The results of this study can contribute to decision making regarding geological disaster prevention and control in Shanghai.

Monitoring Land Subsidence along the Subways in Shanghai on the Basis of Time-Series InSAR

Jinhua Zhang et al.

Summary: Shanghai has experienced microscale land subsidence in recent years, affecting the operational safety of subways and other infrastructures. Using high-resolution TerraSAR-X images and the PS-InSAR method, the land subsidence along the subways in Shanghai was analyzed. The results showed overall stability in land subsidence along the subway lines, with significant deformation mainly occurring along suburban subways that were newly open to traffic. Factors such as human-induced ground loads, foundation pit constructions, and road constructions were identified as the main causes of local land subsidence. The rise in groundwater level was found to be closely related to the deceleration in land subsidence after the subway lines were open to traffic.

Hypsometric changes in urban areas resulting from multiple years of mining activity

Maksymilian Solarski et al.

Summary: The impact of multiple years of underground mining on the elevation changes in Bytom, Poland, has been evaluated. The study found that underground mining has led to the formation of subsidence basins with a maximum depth of 35 meters, and an increase in elevation in raised terrains.

Review of the SBAS InSAR Time-series algorithms, applications, and challenges

Shaowei Li et al.

Summary: The SBAS InSAR time-series technique has become an essential tool for measuring slow surface displacement in the past 30 years. It has been widely used in various geodetic fields due to its millimeter accuracy in monitoring large-scale deformation. This article reviews the algorithms, applications, and challenges of the SBAS method, summarizes its applications in different areas, and explores the difficulties it faces and its future development direction.

Subsidence in Coastal Cities Throughout the World Observed by InSAR

Pei-Chin Wu et al.

Summary: We measured subsidence rates in 99 coastal cities around the world between 2015 and 2020 and found that in most cities, land is sinking faster than sea level is rising. This poses a significant threat of flooding to these cities much earlier than predicted by sea level rise models. The most rapid subsidence is occurring in Asia, but it is also happening in other continents. Human activity, particularly groundwater extraction, is believed to be the main cause of this subsidence. Expanded monitoring and policy interventions are necessary to reduce subsidence rates and minimize its consequences.

Elastic and Inelastic Ground Deformation in Shanghai Lingang Area Revealed by Sentinel-1, Leveling, and Groundwater Level Data

Yanling Chen et al.

Summary: This study used the PSInSAR technique to investigate the spatio-temporal pattern and mechanism of ground subsidence in Shanghai Lingang New City. The high accuracy of PSInSAR was validated through comparison with leveling data. By analyzing PSInSAR measurements and groundwater level data, the skeleton release coefficients were obtained. The study found that the coastal area underwent both elastic and inelastic deformation. This research provides valuable insights for ground subsidence monitoring and groundwater extraction management.

Summary: This study investigates the current adaptation pathways of Asian deltaic cities to flooding induced by sea level rise and land subsidence, using Tokyo, Jakarta, Manila, and Ho Chi Minh City as case studies. The findings suggest that an engineering approach dominates the adaptation strategies, but there are emerging challenges to its sustainability.
