Summary: Two new single-phase RCCAs Nb40Ti40Ta10Cr10 (Cr10) and Nb45Ti30Ta15Al10 (Al10) were designed by alloying ductile NbTiTa RCCAs with low content of Cr or Al, showing excellent tensile strength-ductility combination and the best oxidation resistance at 800°C. Cr10 exhibits slower oxidation kinetics compared with Al10 due to the low Pilling-Bedworth ratio and the special alternative layer structure consisting of rutile and porous mixed oxides.

Development of high strength high plasticity refractory high entropy alloy based on Mo element optimization and advanced forming process

Hang Zhang et al.

Summary: In this paper, three kinds of refractory high entropy alloys, M0, M10 and M20, were designed and formed by Laser powder bed melting (LPBF) technology. The effect of Mo content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the three alloys was studied. The results showed that with the increase of Mo element content, the grain size of the alloy becomes smaller, the yield strength increases greatly, and the plasticity of the alloy decreases continuously. This research solves the matching problem between plasticity and strength of refractory high entropy alloys at room temperature, providing a foundation for their industrial application.

Thermal stability and oxidation resistance of non-equimolar ratio AlTiVCrNb refractory high-entropy alloys

Tong Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the thermal stability, oxidation resistance, and high-temperature mechanical properties of refractory high entropy alloys Ti75Al10V5Cr5Nb5, Ti67Al12V7Cr7Nb7 and Ti55Al15V10Cr10Nb10 were investigated. It was found that the alloys exhibited precipitation of a second phase and order-disorder transformation at high temperatures. The oxidation behavior showed that all three alloys formed rutile-structured oxides, with Ti67Al12V7Cr7Nb7 being less oxidation resistant due to the less stable Nb2O5 phase. The alloys also demonstrated improved mechanical properties at high temperatures, with the presence of intermetallic compound nanoparticles providing an Orowan strengthening effect by inhibiting dislocation movement.

Oxidation behaviour of eutectic refractory high-entropy alloys at 800-1000 °C

Summary: In this study, we investigated the oxidation behavior of refractory high-entropy alloys with different compositions. It was found that increasing the Al/Ti ratio reduced the mass gain but resulted in oxide scale spallation. The studied alloys demonstrated better oxidation resistance than the current high-entropy alloys at 800 degrees C. Analysis of the alloy with near-parabolic oxidation kinetics revealed the formation of an external oxide layer primarily composed of TiO2 and an internal reaction zone with O-rich products and TiN.
