Enzymes in nearly anhydrous deep eutectic solvents: Insight into the biocompatibility and thermal stability

Jun Cao et al.

Summary: With the development of green chemistry, the demand for environmentally friendly and biocompatible solvents for non-aqueous enzymatic catalysis is increasing. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are considered the most promising alternatives to traditional organic solvents in non-aqueous biocatalysis. This study investigated the properties and component structures of DESs and their effects on enzyme performance, providing guidance for DESs design in non-aqueous enzymatic catalysis and expanding their applications in this field.

Thermal Instability of Choline Chloride-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents and Its Influence on Their Toxicity-Important Limitations of DESs as Sustainable Materials

Mateusz Marchel et al.

Summary: The stability, reusability, and biocompatibility of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) play an important role in their applications. The study investigated the long-term stability of three choline chloride (ChCl)-based DESs formed using glucose, malonic acid, and urea as hydrogen bond donors. It was found that ChCl:urea DES showed high thermal stability and low toxicity to bacteria, making it a green solvent. However, ChCl:glucose DES decomposed at elevated temperatures and ChCl:malonic DES showed thermal instability and high toxicity compared to other DESs.

Designing a biocatalytic process involving deep eutectic solvents

Manuela Panic et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have shown promise as an alternative to traditional organic solvents due to their environmental and technological benefits. DESs offer a vast range of structural combinations, making it possible to design optimal solvents for specific enzymatic reactions. While hydrolases are the most studied enzymes in DESs, other enzymes like epoxide hydrolases, phospholipases, proteases, and dehydrogenases require more research for synthetic reactions in DESs.

Basics and properties of deep eutectic solvents: a review

Tracy El Achkar et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents, emerging in green chemistry only seventeen years ago, have led to a plethora of publications covering various research areas and diverse fields of application. They are seen as promising alternatives to conventional organic solvents due to their straightforward preparation using highly accessible and natural compounds, as well as high tunability in properties. The physicochemical properties of these solvents, such as phase behavior, density, viscosity, ionic conductivity, surface tension, and polarity, can be controlled by factors like the choice of forming compounds, molar ratio, temperature, and water content.
