Global prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in the overweight and obese population: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Jingxuan Quek et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of the global prevalence of NAFLD, NAFL, and NASH in overweight and obese individuals. The findings show that the prevalence of NAFLD in the overweight population is 69.99%, NAFL is 42.49%, and NASH is 33.50%. These results contribute to a better understanding of the global burden of NAFLD and support disease management in the at-risk overweight and obese population.

Multimicrochannel Microneedle Microporation Platform for Enhanced Intracellular Drug Delivery

Long Lin et al.

Summary: The multimicrochannel microneedle microporation (4M) platform proposed in this work achieves high efficiency, safety, and uniformity for in vivo intracellular delivery. It utilizes internal microchannels implemented through the microneedle to provide a concentrated, safe electric field that accelerates cargo movement under electrophoresis and triggers cell electroporation for enhanced transport across cell membranes. This platform has shown significant improvements in anticancer effects and reduced systemic toxicity, making it a general-purpose delivery tool for emerging drugs in vivo.

Botulinum Injection Into the Proximal Intestinal Wall of Diet-Induced Obese Mice Leads to Weight Loss and Improves Glucose and Fat Tolerance

Sinju Sundaresan et al.

Summary: Studies demonstrate that injecting Botox into the intestinal wall of obese mice can promote weight loss, reduce food intake, and improve glucose and lipid metabolism without affecting energy expenditure. These effects may be attributed to accelerated gastrointestinal transit and reduced glucose and lipid absorption.

Hollow microneedle assisted intradermal delivery of hypericin lipid nanocapsules with light enabled photodynamic therapy against skin cancer

Heba Abd-El-Azim et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as a promising approach for managing non-melanoma skin cancers. In this study, Hy was successfully encapsulated into lipid nanocapsules (Hy-LNCs) and delivered intradermally using AdminPenTM hollow microneedles (Ho-MNs) array. The Hy-LNCs exhibited higher photoactivity, better skin penetration, and significantly enhanced therapeutic effect compared to free Hy.

Functional changes of the gastric bypass microbiota reactivate thermogenic adipose tissue and systemic glucose control via intestinal FXR-TGR5 crosstalk in diet-induced obesity

Julia Muenzker et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significant role of the gut microbiome in the energy and metabolic improvements achieved through gastric bypass surgery. By eliminating and transplanting the gut microbiota, the study identifies a signaling cascade involving altered bile acid receptor signaling that readjusts energy imbalance and metabolic diseases in obese hosts.

Metabolism and Metabolic Disorders and the Microbiome: The Intestinal Microbiota Associated With Obesity, Lipid Metabolism, and Metabolic Health-Pathophysiology and Therapeutic Strategies

Judith Aron-Wisnewsky et al.

Summary: Studying the changes in the intestinal microbiome and their relationship with obesity, diabetes, and other metabolic diseases has provided insights into the mechanisms by which alterations in the microbiome contribute to these conditions. Recent research has focused on the effects of the microbiome on lipid metabolism and the development of strategies to modify the microbiome to reverse metabolic alterations. These approaches have shown promise in mouse models of obesity and metabolic disorders and hold potential for translating to human applications to improve metabolic health.

Bariatric surgery induces a new gastric mucosa phenotype with increased functional glucagon-like peptide-1 expressing cells

Lara Ribeiro-Parenti et al.

Summary: This study reveals the presence of GLP-1 expressing cells in the stomach, which secrete active GLP-1 and are influenced by weight loss surgeries. Gastric glucose load induces a rapid increase in GLP-1 levels, and obese rats and individuals who undergo surgery exhibit changes in gastric mucosa phenotype.

Supriyo Choudhury et al.

Summary: Botulinum toxin has evolved from a treatment for strabismus to the first-line treatment for focal dystonia, with at least six FDA-approved formulations available for diverse indications. These formulations have varying toxo-pharmacological properties and should not be used interchangeably. Synthetic and non-clostridial sources of BoNT are also nearing clinical use, and studies on mutations in natural toxins have led to modifications in the toxo-pharmacokinetic properties of BoNTs.
