Enhancing the Backbone Coplanarity of n-Type Copolymers for Higher Electron Mobility and Stability in Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Iuliana P. Maria et al.

Summary: In this study, enhanced backbone coplanarity was found to improve the electron mobility and stability of n-type polymers. By substituting the commonly used naphthalene diimide (NDI) unit with the core-extended naphthodithiophene diimide (NDTI) unit, the resulting polymer showed a more planar backbone with closer packing, resulting in significantly increased electron mobility. The NDTI-based polymer also exhibited lower parasitic reactions with molecular oxygen and improved stability during electrochemical charging and ON-OFF switching. The results highlight the importance of polymer backbone design for developing stable and high-performing n-type materials with mixed ionic-electronic conduction in aqueous media.
