Atomically-thin single-photon sources for quantum communication

Timm Gao et al.

Summary: Currently, quantum communication relies on attenuated lasers for secret key generation. However, in future quantum networks, deterministic quantum light sources are needed to overcome limitations from probabilistic photon distribution. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) show potential as emitters for quantum light generation, and we demonstrate their practicality in quantum communication by using a TMDC single-photon source in a quantum key distribution (QKD) setup. Our results show performance comparable to QKD experiments using semiconductor quantum dots or color centers in diamond, and pave the way for wider applications of quantum information technologies using TMDC single-photon sources.

Dipolar Coupling at Interfaces of Ultrathin Semiconductors, Semimetals, Plasmonic Nanoparticles, and Molecules

Lara Greten et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in growth techniques have made it possible to fabricate stacks of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers combined with various nanostructures. These structures can combine the optoelectric properties of their constituents to design structures with desired properties. Understanding the coupling among different constituents is crucial for all of these examples. In this article, a unified description based on Maxwell Bloch equations is presented to describe dipolar interactions among different heterostructures. The article discusses Forster-type energy transfer from dye molecules to MoS2 monolayers, strong coupling at MoSe2-metal nanoparticle interfaces, Meitner-Auger-like interlayer coupling in WSe2-graphene stacks, and relaxation processes of hot interlayer excitons in MoSe2-WSe2 heterobilayers.

Two-Photon Interference from a Quantum Emitter in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Clarisse Fournier et al.

Summary: Recently discovered quantum emitters in 2D materials have the potential to revolutionize integrated photonic devices for quantum information. In order to utilize these emitters effectively, it is crucial to achieve indistinguishable emitted photons. This study investigates two-photon interference in hexagonal boron nitride and finds that the emitted photons exhibit a partial indistinguishability of 0.44 +/- 0.11 in a 3-ns time window, with a corrected value of 0.56 +/- 0.11 accounting for imperfect emitter purity. The dephasing time of the emitter is estimated to be approximately 1.5 ns, half the limit set by spontaneous emission, and a visibility greater than 90% could be achieved with current 2D-material photonics and the Purcell effect.

Impact of dark excitons on F?rster-type resonant energy transfer between dye molecules and atomically thin semiconductors

Manuel Katzer et al.

Summary: Interfaces between dye molecules and two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) combine strong molecular dipole excitations with high carrier mobilities in semiconductors. Forster energy transfer is a key mechanism for the coupling between them. Microscopic calculations based on Bloch equations and Maxwell's equations reveal spectrally resolved Forster induced transition rates from dye molecules to TMDC layers, incorporating the dielectric environment of the TMDC semiconductor.

Integrated room temperature single-photon source for quantum key distribution

Helen Zhi Jie Zeng et al.

Summary: In this work, a high-purity single-photon source (SPS) operating at room temperature is achieved by integrating an atomic defect in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) with a solid immersion lens (SIL). The source efficiency is significantly increased by a factor of six compared to previous methods, and the integrated system can generate over ten million single photons per second at room temperature. These results are promising for practical applications of SPS in quantum communication protocols.

Free-Space Quantum Key Distribution with Single Photons from Defects in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Caglar Samaner et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates a free-space quantum key distribution system based on single photon generation from a defect in hexagonal boron nitride. The effect of temporal filtering of detected photons on the system performance is also studied. The results show that the bright source operating at room temperature achieves a high sifted key rate and a low quantum bit error rate, which are of great significance for advancing research and practical applications in quantum information technologies.
