Diffraction Phenomena in Time-Varying Metal-Based Metasurfaces

Antonio Alex-Amor et al.

Summary: This paper presents an analytical framework for analyzing time-varying metal-based metamaterials. Specifically, the study focuses on time-modulated metal-air interfaces embedded between two different semi-infinite media that are illuminated by monochromatic plane waves. The formulation is based on a Floquet-Bloch modal expansion and integral-equation techniques, allowing for the extraction of reflection, transmission coefficients, and nontrivial features of time-modulated metal-based screens. The paper also discusses the similarities and differences between space- and time-modulated metamaterials using an associated analytical equivalent circuit.

Floquet Analysis of Space-Time Modulated Metasurfaces With Lorentz Dispersion

Summary: A rigorous semianalytical Floquet analysis method is proposed for modeling and determining the scattered fields of space-time-modulated metasurfaces. The method treats metasurfaces as spatial discontinuities with zero thickness and describes them in terms of Lorentzian electric and magnetic surface susceptibilities, with parameters periodically modulated in space and time.

Exploring the Potential of the Multi-Modal Equivalent Circuit Approach for Stacks of 2-D Aperture Arrays

Antonio Alex-Amor et al.

Summary: In this study, stacks of 2-D aperture arrays are analyzed and designed using a rigorous and systematic formulation based on the multimodal equivalent circuit approach. The research reveals that linear transformations between adjacent plates' apertures can bring potential benefits in practical applications, and either the purely analytical or hybrid approach can be applied in scenarios where the spatial profile of the electric field on the considered apertures hardly changes with frequency.

Wave Analysis and Homogenization of a Spatiotemporally Modulated Wire Medium

Michael Kreiczer et al.

Summary: A homogenization theory for a spatiotemporally modulated wire medium is developed in this study. The unique modal waves and peculiar properties resulting from the spatiotemporal modulation, as well as the nonlocality, nonreciprocity, and anisotropy of the medium, are explained. It is shown that in certain cases, homogenization should be directly performed on the spatiotemporally modulated composite medium rather than on the stationary medium first.

Homogenization Theory of Space-Time Metamaterials

P. A. Huidobro et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a general framework for the homogenization theory of space-time metamaterials, deriving analytical formulas for effective material parameters in the low-frequency limit for traveling-wave modulations. It shows how synthetic motion can lead to giant bianisotropy and how modulation speed and phase can tune the nonreciprocal response. The theory is applied to derive exact formulas for the Fresnel drag in electromagnetic media with traveling-wave modulations, providing insight into differences and similarities between synthetic motion and moving matter.
