Cultivating the Mediterranean Wild Edible Species Cichorium spinosum L. in Aquaponics: Functional and Growth Responses to Minimal Nutrient Supplementation

Evangelia Tsoumalakou et al.

Summary: Aquaponics is a sustainable plant and fish co-cultivation system. However, sub-optimal concentrations of Fe and K often reduce crop yields. In this study, stamnagathi plants were cultivated in an aquaponics setup with minimal supplementation of Fe and K. The results showed that Fe supplementation alone or in combination with K significantly improved plant growth and yield compared to the control group.

Spinach Responds to Minimal Nutrient Supplementation in Aquaponics by Up-Regulating Light Use Efficiency, Photochemistry, and Carboxylation

Evangelia Tsoumalakou et al.

Summary: The study aims to examine the limitations on spinach growth and functional performance in a closed-loop aquaponics system and identify the minimum nutrient supplementation for their optimization. The results show that iron deficiency is the major bottleneck for spinach cultivation in this system, and only iron supplementation can significantly improve the growth and yield of spinach.

Aquaponic systems: biological and technological parameters

Milena Krastanova et al.

Summary: Aquaponics is an integrated ecosystem that combines aquaculture, hydroponics, and beneficial bacteria, which is considered a sustainable method of organic food production. This review analyzes the biological and technological parameters of aquaponic systems and emphasizes the contribution of advances in aquaponics technology to sustainable food systems. Further research on the biological and technological characteristics of aquaponic systems is important for both researchers and stakeholders.

Precise Monitoring of Lettuce Functional Responses to Minimal Nutrient Supplementation Identifies Aquaponic System's Nutrient Limitations and Their Time-Course

Evangelia Tsoumalakou et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of nutrient deficiencies on plant growth in aquaponics, finding that supplementing with iron and iron combined with potassium can increase lettuce and red tilapia production. The results emphasize the importance of monitoring crop functional responses for sustainable aquaponics.

Complementary Nutrients in Decoupled Aquaponics Enhance Basil Performance

Dylan Rodgers et al.

Summary: Aquaponics is an innovative method that combines fish farming and plant cultivation to reduce water consumption and reliance on chemical fertilizers. This study found that adding nutrients in a decoupled aquaponic system enhanced plant performance, making it comparable to a conventional hydroponic system that uses chemical-based nutrients.

MODIS PRI performance to track Light Use Efficiency of a Mediterranean coniferous forest: Determinants, restrictions and the role of LUE range

Theofilos Vanikiotis et al.

Summary: The study investigates the use of MODIS-derived PRI to track LUE variability in a Mediterranean coniferous forest, finding that Aqua PRI correlates better with LUE compared to Terra PRI. Using PAR for LUE calculation results in better PRI relationships than using APAR. The study also highlights the importance of considering LUE range effect when comparing different PRI datasets.

Suitability of supernatant of aerobic and anaerobic pikeperch (Sander lucioperca L.) sludge treatments as a water source for hydroponic production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. capitata)

Boris Delaide et al.

Summary: Aquaponics is a system combining aquaculture and hydroponics, where the addition of lacking nutrients in sludge treatment supernatants can improve plant growth performance, although it may also result in toxic factors affecting plants negatively.

Freshwater-adapted sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax feeding frequency impact in a lettuce Lactuca sativa aquaponics system

Paraskevi Stathopoulou et al.

Summary: The results of this study indicate that feeding sea bass four times or eight times a day leads to better growth performance and nutrient utilization efficiency, supporting plant growth effectively in the aquaponic system, without any observed negative effects on fish or plant health.

Basil as Secondary Crop in Cascade Hydroponics: Exploring Salinity Tolerance Limits in Terms of Growth, Amino Acid Profile, and Nutrient Composition

Denisa Avdouli et al.

Summary: The study evaluated basil's salinity-tolerance thresholds in a cascade hydroponic system, finding that 5 dS m(-1) was the upper limit of tolerance to stress. Higher salinity levels suppressed growth but significantly increased total amino acid concentration. Basil showed a compromise between reduced fresh produce and increased amino acid content in the system, indicating its potential as a secondary crop in cascade-hydroponics.

Effects of Fish Stocking Density on Water Quality, Growth Performance of Tilapia and Yield of Butterhead Lettuce Grown in Decoupled Recirculation Aquaponic Systems

Abdel Razzaq Al Tawaha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of fish stocking density on water quality and growth of tilapia and lettuce yield in a decoupled recirculation aquaponic system. Results showed that higher stocking density led to poorer water quality and increased nutrient accumulation, but lower stocking density may provide higher nutrient concentrations.
