Giant Magnetic Anisotropy in the Atomically Thin van der Waals Antiferromagnet FePS3

Youjin Lee et al.

Summary: Van der Waals magnets are ideal for tailoring 2D magnetism, and this study investigates the microscopic origin of magnetic order in the antiferromagnetic system FePS3. The experiments reveal a giant out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy and unquenched magnetic orbital moments. Calculations suggest that the Ising magnetism in FePS3 is a manifestation of spin-orbit entanglement in the Fe 3d electron system.

Multiferroic and ferroelectric phases revealed in 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene film for high performance resistive data storage devices

Rabia Tahir et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple approach to observe frequency-dependent ferroelectricity and multiferroicity in 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene film at room-temperature was reported. The results confirmed the presence of strong magneto-electric coupling and showed the control of electric polarization by magnetic fields. The ferroelectric Ti3C2Tx MXene film was also employed as an active layer in resistive data storage devices, resulting in stable switching behavior and improved on/off ratio.

Pressure-induced charge orders and their postulated coupling to magnetism in hexagonal multiferroic LuFe2O4

Fengliang Liu et al.

Summary: Hexagonal LuFe2O4 exhibits various charge-ordered phases with different magnetic orders under external pressure. The redistribution of charge density induced by pressure in the frustrated double-layer [Fe2O4] cluster is responsible for the correlated spin-charge phase transitions. Enhanced Coulomb interactions among Fe-Fe bonds drive the frustrated charge order into a less frustrated charge order, leading to the transition from ferrimagnetism to antiferromagnetism. This study not only elucidates the coupling mechanism among charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom in LuFe2O4, but also provides a new approach for tuning spin-charge orders.

Nonvolatile electrical control of spin polarization in the 2D bipolar magnetic semiconductor VSeF

Yuhui Li et al.

Summary: This study reports a 2D material VSeF with opposite spin-polarized valence and conduction band edges, and proposes a general nonvolatile strategy to control the spin polarizations in BMS materials by introducing a ferroelectric gate. The electric dipole of ferroelectric bilayer Al2Se3 successfully controls the spin-up/spin-down polarization of VSeF, and the interfacial doping effect enhances its Curie temperature. Two types of spin field effect transistors, multiferroic memory and spin filter, are achieved in VSeF/Al2Se3 and VSeF/Al2Se3/Al2Se3 multiferroic heterostructures. This work will promote the application of 2D BMS materials in future spintronic nanodevices.

Enhanced Room Temperature Ferromagnetism in Highly Strained 2D Semiconductor Cr2Ge2Te6

Adam O'Neill et al.

Summary: We demonstrate that the structural gradients found in strained nanoscale wrinkles in Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT) can significantly increase the transition temperature (Tc), which is a key obstacle in using van der Waals materials for spintronic applications. This finding is supported by experimental evidence and ab initio studies, providing insights into the mechanism of enhanced magnetism and Tc.

Intrinsic ferromagnetic triferroicity in bilayer T'-VTe2

Ting Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a mechanism for achieving intrinsic ferromagnetic triferroicity in two-dimensional van der Waals lattices, which is demonstrated in bilayer T'-VTe2. Using first-principles calculations, the study reveals that bilayer T'-VTe2 exhibits spontaneous ferromagnetism, ferroelasticity, and ferroelectricity simultaneously, achieving the long-sought intrinsic triferroicity.

Coupling between magnetic order and charge transport in a two-dimensional magnetic semiconductor

Evan J. Telford et al.

Summary: Tunable electron transport is demonstrated within the magnetic phase of the 2D semiconductor CrSBr, revealing a strong coupling between its magnetic order and charge transport. The magnetoresistance can be dynamically and reversibly tuned by varying the carrier concentration, providing a mechanism for controlling charge transport in 2D magnets.

Proximate ferromagnetic state in the Kitaev model material α-RuCl3

H. Suzuki et al.

Summary: The study on alpha-RuCl3 reveals that its candidate status as a quantum spin liquid is compromised by the presence of zigzag antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures, which is destabilized by quantum fluctuations and ultimately leads to a ferromagnetic ground state. The competition among these three states, including ferromagnetism and the Kitaev spin liquid, is crucial for understanding the unusual properties of alpha-RuCl3 in magnetic fields.
