Control strategies for atmospheric pressure plasma polymerization of fluorinated silane thin films with antiadhesive properties

Giulia Laghi et al.

Summary: The validity of the Yasuda parameter W/FM as a controlling parameter for plasma polymerization is demonstrated using an atmospheric pressure single electrode plasma jet. Thin films deposited under different W/FM values exhibit different chemical and physical properties. Coatings with similar characteristics can be obtained regardless of the power and feed rate values adopted. Preliminary results show that the deposited coatings have antiadhesive activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.

Atmospheric-pressure plasma assisted engineering of polymer surfaces: From high hydrophobicity to superhydrophilicity

Chuanlong Ma et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that by combining plasma activation and plasma polymerization, the wettability of polymer surfaces can be tuned from highly hydrophobic to superhydrophilic with stability. Introducing more oxygen-containing functional groups leads to superhydrophilization, while surface roughness increase and CH3 group introduction result in hydrophobization. The coatings engineered with this unique combination showed high stability in water over 14 days, making them promising for biomedical applications.

Efficacy of a plasma-deposited, vancomycin/chitosan antibiotic coating for orthopaedic devices in a bacterially challenged rabbit model

Sarah M. Helms et al.

Summary: This study examined the efficacy of co-deposited vancomycin/chitosan coatings on metallic implants using a plasma process in a bacterially challenged rabbit model. The thin chitosan and vancomycin coating showed antimicrobial properties, prevented bacterial adhesion, and inhibited biofilm formation. Both roughening and partial implantation of alumina particles on titanium alloy implants after blasting did not affect the short-term antimicrobial effects of the chitosan/vancomycin coating.
