Simultaneous enhancement of mechanical and shape memory properties by heat-treatment homogenization of Ti2Ni precipitates in TiNi shape memory alloy fabricated by selective laser melting

H. Z. Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the simultaneous enhancement of mechanical and shape memory properties of TiNi shape memory alloys fabricated using selective laser melting. Heat-treatment homogenization of Ti2Ni precipitates is found to significantly improve the alloy's tensile strength, elongation, and shape memory effect. The enhanced properties are attributed to precipitation strengthening, work hardening, and the presence of homogeneous nanoscale globular Ti2Ni precipitates, which inhibit the propagation of microcracks and suppress dislocation movement.

Grain Structure Engineering of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys by Intensive Plastic Deformation

Zifan Wang et al.

Summary: An effective route of customizing the superelasticity (SE) of NiTi shape memory alloys via modifying the grain structure was explored. It was found that the smaller the grain size, the higher the phase transformation nucleation kinetics, and the lower the propagation kinetics. Stress concentration happens near high-angle grain boundaries, while no obvious stress concentration can be observed in low-angle grain boundary structures. The statistical distribution of strain becomes asymmetric during loading.

Evolution of martensitic microstructures in nanocrystalline NiTi wires deformed in tension

Orsolya Molnarova et al.

Summary: An experimental method is introduced for reconstructing martensite variant microstructures in nanocrystalline NiTi wire. It was found that the martensitic microstructures in the wire transform to different states upon loading and unloading, leading to characteristic microstructures with recoverable and unrecovered strains. The study also shows that the plastic deformation of oriented martensite proceeds by coordinated deformation twinning and dislocation slip, resulting in a refinement of the austenitic microstructure.

Stable tensile recovery strain induced by a Ni4Ti3 nanoprecipitate in a Ni50.4Ti49.6 shape memory alloy fabricated via selective laser melting

H. Z. Lu et al.

Summary: A stable tensile recovery strain induced by a Ni4Ti3 nanoprecipitate in a Ni50.4Ti49.6 shape memory alloy fabricated via selective laser melting was reported. The heat-treated SMA exhibited a larger strain/stress field inside the grain interior region and showed three-stage phase transformation. The results provide insights into tailoring the microstructure and functional properties of NiTi SMAs by SLM.
