Microfluidic-based technologies for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of COVID-19: recent advances and future directions

E. Alperay Tarim et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need for new technologies in healthcare systems, particularly in the development of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Microfluidic-based technologies, with their advantages of being rapid, low-cost, accurate, and on-site, have shown great potential in the fight against COVID-19. These technologies have been applied in various aspects, including detection of COVID-19 infections, vaccine development and testing, as well as drug discovery and targeted delivery. This review summarizes recent advances in the use of microfluidic platforms in these areas and provides insights into future perspectives and research directions.

Portable microfluidic impedance biosensor for SARS-CoV-2 detection

Soroush Laleh et al.

Summary: Pandemics like the current one require simple and reliable methods for early diagnosis of viruses, which can detect low pathogen loads before symptoms appear. The standard PCR method is slow, expensive, and not easily accessible. Therefore, there is a need for miniaturized and portable sensors for early pathogen detection. In this study, a microfluidic impedance biosensor was developed for direct detection of SARS-CoV-2, optimized for accurate detection using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The biosensor was validated using buffer samples and real patient samples, and its versatility was demonstrated with different settings, including a portable potentiostat and smartphone-based readout. This work contributes to rapid and reliable COVID-19 diagnostics and can be extended to monitor viral load in vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.

A graphene-based dengue immunosensor using plant-derived envelope glycoprotein domain III (EDIII) as the novel probe antigen

Qi Yan Siew et al.

Summary: A novel immunosensor based on a graphene-coated screen-printed carbon electrode was developed for detecting DENV IgG antibodies with high sensitivity and specificity, capable of differentiating DENV IgG from antibodies of other infectious diseases. The immunosensor also showed promising potential for realistic applications in detecting dengue antibodies in serum samples.
