Rheology and tribology of nanocellulose-based biodegradable greases: Wear and friction protection mechanisms of cellulose microfibrils

Sergey O. Ilyin et al.

Summary: Dispersion of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) in triethyl citrate is a typical grease with shear-thinning, shear-thickening, and viscoelastic properties. It can maintain its flowability at low temperatures (-50°C), making it potentially applicable as a low-temperature lubricant. Microfibrils reduce friction and wear on steel surfaces by filling irregularities and forming a chromium-enriched friction film.

Oil structuring properties of electrospun Kraft lignin/cellulose acetate nanofibers for lubricating applications: influence of lignin source and lignin/cellulose acetate ratio

J. F. Rubio-Valle et al.

Summary: In this study, electrospun Kraft lignin/cellulose acetate nanostructures were produced and investigated as structuring or thickening agents in castor oil for lubricating applications. The morphology of the electrospun nanofibers was influenced by the rheological properties, electrical conductivity, and surface tension of KL/CA solutions, which were in turn affected by the chemical structure and composition of the Kraft lignins. The resulting oleogels, based on KL/CA electrospun nanostructures, exhibited desirable rheological and tribological properties, making them a promising sustainable alternative to conventional lubricating greases.

Lignin-enriched residues from bioethanol production: Chemical characterization, isocyanate functionalization and oil structuring properties

Antonio M. Borrero-Lopez et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of using lignin-enriched waste products from bioethanol production as thickeners for lubricating greases. The content of lignin and hydroxyl ratio were found to influence the NCO-functionalization and rheological response of the resulting oleogels, with barley straw residues exhibiting the highest storage modulus.

Rheological and tribological properties of low-temperature greases based on cellulose acetate butyrate gel

Svetlana N. Gorbacheva et al.

Summary: A new approach to produce biodegradable low-temperature greases based on CAB/ATBC systems is proposed, with CAB gelation reducing the wear coefficient but increasing the friction coefficient. The introduction of various solid additives, especially PTFE at 10% concentration, has been shown to improve the tribological properties of gel greases.

Electrospun lignin-PVP nanofibers and their ability for structuring oil

Maria Borrego et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electrospinnability of low-sulfonate Kraft lignin and polyvinylpyrrolidone solutions in N,N-dimethylformamide and their application in structuring castor oil. Different nano structures are generated based on the rheological properties of the solution, leading to the formation of oleogels with tailored rheological properties. These oleogels, serving as bio-based lubricants, exhibit satisfactory friction and wear performance.
