Evaluation of Apical and Molecular Effects of Algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata to Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles

Ntombikayise Mahaye et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of cerium oxide nanoparticles on Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The results showed that the nanoparticles inhibited the growth of the algae in the short term but promoted growth in the long term. Additionally, the nanoparticles caused DNA damage. Therefore, sub-lethal concentrations of cerium oxide nanoparticles may pose a more serious threat to algae under chronic-exposure conditions.

Meta-analysis of Bioaccumulation Data for Nondissolvable Engineered Nanomaterials in Freshwater Aquatic Organisms

Yuanfang Zheng et al.

Summary: Understanding the bioaccumulation of engineered nanomaterials in aquatic organisms is crucial for environmental risk management. This study conducted a meta-analysis of existing literature to comprehensively analyze the bioaccumulation of eight types of nondissolvable engineered nanomaterials in nonmammalian freshwater organisms, and identified meaningful findings.

Particle number-based trophic transfer of gold nanomaterials in an aquatic food chain

Fazel Abdolahpur Monikh et al.

Summary: The study explored the fate of gold nanoparticles in an aquatic food chain, demonstrating that their distribution in organisms is determined by the size and shape of the nanoparticles. The findings highlight the importance of physicochemical properties of metallic NMs in their biotransformations and tropic transfers.

Effects of humic substances on the aqueous stability of cerium dioxide nanoparticles and their toxicity to aquatic organisms

Qi Yu et al.

Summary: The addition of humic substances (HS) to nano-cerium dioxide (nCeO(2)) suspensions enhances stability and reduces toxicity for some organisms, but increases toxicity for others. The impact of HS on nCeO(2) toxicity varies among different aquatic organisms with different exposure characteristics.

A point-of-entry bioaccumulation study of nanoscale pigment copper phthalocyanine in aquatic organisms

Chengfang Pang et al.

Summary: The study found a low bioaccumulation potential of nano-CuPc in freshwater organisms, indicating limited entry from sediment into the benthic food web. Nano-CuPc showed relatively high attachment to algae, but insignificant accumulation in crustaceans and snails after exposure. These results suggest that nano-CuPc mainly remains in water and sediments rather than being bioaccumulated by aquatic organisms.
