Vertically Aligned Nanowires and Quantum Dots: Promises and Results in Light Energy Harvesting

Giuseppe Prestopino et al.

Summary: The synthesis of crystals with a high surface-to-volume ratio is crucial for advanced electronic devices and sensors. Vertical nanowires aligned with the substrate surface are the easiest way to achieve this. Wet chemistry methods for growing aligned nanowires and functionalizing their surfaces with quantum dots have been studied, and the best results in terms of photoconversion efficiencies have been obtained through slow multi-step local drop casting. Among the materials used, ZnO shows the most promise due to its piezo-phototronic effects.

Fabrication of ZnO@Plant Polyphenols/Cellulose as Active Food Packaging and Its Enhanced Antibacterial Activity

Jingheng Nie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of plant polyphenol (PPL) extracted from larch bark to be used as an active package material. The PPL was combined with cellulose to prepare ZnO@PPL/Cel composite, which showed superior antibacterial activity compared to ZnO/Cel. The interaction between ZnO, PPL, and cellulose was attributed to hydrogen bonding, and the antibacterial mechanism was elaborated on. The low cost and simple preparation method of the composite suggest its potential for application in active food packaging.

Effect of the Alkaline Agent Nature on the Microstructure and Properties of Zinc Oxide Prepared via Precipitation Method

A. V. Sivtseva et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different alkaline agents on the specific surface area, size, and shape of zinc oxide particles. It is found that using NH4OH and NaOH in polyacrylamides precipitation is favorable for the formation of large hexagon particles, with NH4OH resulting in the largest particle size. The sample prepared via thermal decomposition of the products from the reaction between zinc nitrate and ammonium carbonate offers the largest specific surface area and smallest particle size.
