Fabrication, structural, morphological, and optical features of Mn2O3 polyhedron nano-rods and Mn2O3/reduced graphene oxide hybrid nanocomposites

Islam Gomaa et al.

Summary: Mn2O3 and Mn2O3/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites were prepared using hydrothermal and sono-chemical methods. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Transmission electron microscope, Fourier transform infra-red, and Raman spectroscopy. The addition of rGO sheets to the matrix resulted in a decrease in particle sizes. Optical properties were measured using a UV-visible spectrometer, and the optical band gap was tuned to a lower value of about 1.57 eV. The results showed that the optical and morphological structure of Mn2O3 were enhanced by the addition of rGO sheets.

Potential Future Alternative Resources for Rare Earth Elements: Opportunities and Challenges

Vysetti Balaram

Summary: Currently, the increasing demand for rare earth elements (REE) in various carbon-neutral technologies has led to a need for alternative sources due to depleting ores and rising mining costs. This review focuses on exploring the potential of alternative resources such as marine sediments, coal ash, industrial waste products, and even potential mining on the Moon. It is evident that sustainable REE recovery from these sources is necessary to meet the growing demand and future requirements.

Removal of rare-earth elements from aqueous solutions by microporous titanosilicate ETS-4

Joao Pinto et al.

Summary: The mining of Rare-Earth Elements (REE) has raised concerns due to its unsustainability and negative impacts on the environment, economy, and society. This study explored the use of microporous titanosilicate ETS-4 for the removal of a mixture of REE3+ from contaminated water. Factors such as pH, concentration, and sorbent amount were studied, and the results showed that increasing pH and higher sorbent amounts led to greater removal of REE3+. The study also revealed that ETS-4 has the potential to effectively remove high concentrations of REE3+ from aqueous solutions.

Rare earth elements in tea garden soils and their bioavailability to tea buds in Taiwan

Zzu-Ying Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentration and fractionation tendency of rare earth elements (REEs) in soil and tea buds from tea gardens in Taiwan. It was found that light REEs (LREEs) were more abundant than medium REEs (MREEs) and heavy REEs (HREEs) in both soil and tea bud samples. The concentration of REEs in the tea buds was positively correlated with the amount of aluminum, and MREEs and HREEs showed stronger correlations with aluminum than LREEs. The extractabilities of MREEs and HREEs by different extractants in the soils were higher than those of LREEs, which coincided with their higher enrichments in the tea buds.

The Remediation of Dysprosium-Containing Effluents Using Cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis and Yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Inga Zinicovscaia et al.

Summary: A comparative study was conducted on the biosorption capacity of cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis and yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae towards dysprosium ions. The experiment evaluated the effects of pH, concentration, time, and temperature on biosorption capacity. Results showed that both biosorbents exhibited efficient and pH-dependent dysprosium removal. Adsorption data fitted well with the Langmuir model and the kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order and Elovich models. The maximum biosorption capacities were 3.24 mg/g and 5.84 mg/g for Spirulina platensis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis revealed the spontaneous nature of dysprosium biosorption, with exothermic behavior for Saccharomyces cerevisiae and endothermic behavior for Spirulina platensis. Thus, biological sorbents can serve as an eco-friendly alternative for dysprosium recovery from wastewater.

Application of Cyanobacteria Arthospira platensis for Bioremediation of Erbium-Contaminated Wastewater

Nikita Yushin et al.

Summary: This study used the cyanobacteria Arthospira platensis for the removal of Er(III) from wastewater through biosorption and bioaccumulation processes. The optimal conditions for Er(III) removal were determined, and it was found that Er(III) concentrations did not affect the biomass composition except for lipids. The biomass accumulated a significant amount of Er(III) from the cultivation medium. Arthospira platensis can be considered as a safe and efficient bioremediator for erbium-contaminated environments.
