Atomically precise copper dopants in metal clusters boost up stability, fluorescence, and photocatalytic activity

Yifei Zhang et al.

Summary: We report a rod-like nanocluster [Au12Cu13(PPh3)(10)I-7](SbF6)(2) (Au12Cu13), which is formed through the transformation of an [Au-9(PPh3)(8)](3+) intermediate in the presence of CuI. Au12Cu13 consists of two pentagonal bipyramids Au6Cu units and a pentagonal prism Cu-11 unit, with the copper and gold species in +1 and 0 chemical states, respectively. The Cu-dopants significantly enhance the stability and fluorescence of Au12Cu13, and its high stability is attributed to the high binding energy of iodine ligands, Au-Cu synergistic effects, and its 16-electron system as an 8-electron superatom dimer. Finally, the robust Au12Cu13 exhibits high catalytic activity and durability in methanol photo-oxidation.

Three-Dimensional Plasmonic Nanocluster-Driven Light-Matter Interaction for Photoluminescence Enhancement and Picomolar-Level Biosensing

Won-Geun Kim et al.

Summary: Plasmonic nanoparticle clusters offer unique electromagnetic responses at optical frequencies and can be used for nanophotonic applications. This study presents a novel strategy for fabricating three-dimensional nanoparticle clusters with efficient coupling between gold nanoparticles and other nanomaterials. Quantum dots embedded in the clusters exhibit a blue shift in emission spectrum. In addition, an ultracompact diagnostic platform is demonstrated for detecting viruses and mutations.

Self-Assembly of Silver Clusters into One- and Two-Dimensional Structures and Highly Selective Methanol Sensing

Zhaoxian Qin et al.

Summary: This study designs two silver cluster-based polymers to simulate the human nose and distinguish organic solvents. The relationship between the atomic structures of these polymers and the electrical properties in the presence of organic solvents is investigated. The ligands, cations, and solvent molecules are found to play important roles in the self-assembly and sensing functionality of the materials.
