Bubble nucleation and dynamics in acoustic droplet vaporization: a review of concepts, applications, and new directions

Mitra Aliabouzar et al.

Summary: The development of phase-shift droplets has expanded the possibilities of ultrasound-based biomedical applications. Acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV), where the perfluorocarbon phase undergoes a phase transition to a gaseous state under sufficient acoustic pressures, has been extensively researched. This review covers experimental approaches, theoretical models, and recent advancements in tissue regeneration using ADV, as well as potential future applications in microrheology and pressure estimation.

EGFR-Targeted Perfluorohexane Nanodroplets for Molecular Ultrasound Imaging

Sidhartha Jandhyala et al.

Summary: In this study, a new strategy was demonstrated to synthesize antibody-conjugated perfluorohexane nanodroplet ultrasound contrast agents that targeted cells overexpressing the epidermal growth factor receptor. The developed nanodroplets showed a significantly higher increase in ultrasound amplitude compared to non-targeted nanodroplets, indicating their potential for molecular imaging cancer diagnostics.

Repeated Acoustic Vaporization of Perfluorohexane Nanodroplets for Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound Imaging

Austin Van Namen et al.

Summary: Superheated perfluorocarbon nanodroplets are emerging ultrasound imaging contrast agents with biocompatible components and unique phase-change dynamics. They provide high contrast ultrasound images by undergoing a liquid-to-gas phase change upon exposure to a high-intensity pulse. However, their single-use limitation has been addressed by using a perfluorohexane core that allows the microbubbles to recondense back into their stable form, overcoming this drawback.

INVESTIGATION OF THE ACOUSTIC VAPORIZATION THRESHOLD OF LIPID-COATED PERFLUOROBUTANE NANODROPLETS USING BOTH HIGH-SPEED OPTICAL IMAGING AND ACOUSTIC METHODS

Qiang Wu et al.

Summary: The vaporization process of phospholipid-coated perfluorobutane nanodroplets (PFB NDs) was studied using ultrahigh-speed optical imaging, B-mode ultrasound, and passive cavitation detection. The results indicate that PFB NDs can be vaporized at moderate peak negative pressures, pulse lengths, and pulse repetition frequencies, making them potential cavitation agents. Application-specific thresholds should be defined based on the desired biological/therapeutic effect.
