A year with the fear of COVID-19 in multiple sclerosis patients: Examination of depression, sleep quality and quality of life before and after the pandemic

Kubra Yeni et al.

Summary: This study compared the depression, sleep, and quality of life before and one year after the COVID-19 pandemic in PwMS, and investigated the association between the fear of COVID-19 and these parameters. The results showed that PwMS experienced significantly higher levels of anxiety and depression during the pandemic, and their sleep quality deteriorated. There was a deterioration in some sub-dimensions of quality of life, especially those related to mental health. Multiple regression analysis indicated that anxiety, depression, and sleep problems were predictors of both physical and mental health sub-dimensions.

Depression, anxiety, and fear of COVID-19 in patients with multiple sclerosis in pandemic era: a cross-sectional study

Mohammad Alirezaei et al.

Summary: Depression and anxiety play crucial roles in determining the quality of life of patients with multiple sclerosis. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of anxious and depressive symptoms and their relating factors in PWMS in the COVID-19 pandemic era. The results showed that the presence of depressive symptoms in PWMS is significantly related to educational level, number of hospital admissions due to MS relapses, marital status, and fear of COVID-19. Additionally, patients classified as suffering from anxious symptoms had more severe problems with fear of COVID-19. Further studies are recommended to compare patients' scores before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between psychological symptoms and dysphagia in persons with multiple sclerosis, finding that increased psychological stress, decreased use of cognitive reappraisal strategies, and increased indicators of emotional suppression independently predicted the presence of dysphagia. People with dysphagia had poorer psychological well-being compared to those without, highlighting the importance of addressing psychological difficulties in treatment planning.
