Microbial traces found in microdolomite associated with seep-related shallow gas hydrate

Fumito Shiraishi et al.

Summary: Recently, microdolomite grains with a diameter of about 30-150 μm were found in shallow gas hydrates in the Japan Sea. The formation of these grains is believed to be influenced by microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The study analyzed the minerals and organic matter inside the microdolomite grains, revealing distinct cores and external cements. The cores showed fibriform pores closely related to amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) and carboxy groups, while the external cements consisted of monocrystalline or rhombohedral dolomite crystals.

Modern dolomite formation caused by seasonal cycling of oxygenic phototrophs and anoxygenic phototrophs in a hypersaline sabkha

Zach A. Diloreto et al.

Summary: The Dolomite Problem, a century-old controversy, involves the formation of low-temperature dolomite in ancient rocks despite favorable geochemical conditions. Microbes and their exopolymeric substances (EPS) have been found to play a role in nucleating dolomite, with a shift in microbial communities affecting the EPS suited for dolomite precipitation. The turnover of organic material under anoxic conditions is identified as an important driver of the process, shedding new light on the interpretation of dolomite throughout Earth's history.

Dolomite genesis in bioturbated marine zones of an early-middle Miocene coastal mud volcano outcrop (Kuwait)

Summary: The spheroidal dolomite found in marine zones may have formed in strictly anoxic conditions, possibly related to the flow of hydrated carbonate, influx of hypersaline seawater, bioturbation activity, and fluid flow.
