Facies analysis, depositional sequences and platform evolution of the Sarvak Formation (late Albian-Turonian) in the Zagros Basin, West of Iran

Moosa Esfandyari et al.

Summary: The Sarvak Formation is a carbonate interval with significant hydrocarbon reserves, and this study examined its depositional environment and sequence stratigraphy. Five depositional sequences were identified, deposited on a carbonate platform, ramp, and rimmed shelf, indicating changes in tectonic regime and obduction of the Neotethys' ocean crust. Eustatic changes during the Albian to Turonian also played a role in shaping the depositional sequences.

Impacts of Depositional Facies and Diagenesis on Reservoir Quality: A Case Study from the Rudist-bearing Sarvak Formation, Abadan Plain, SW Iran

Ali Assadi et al.

Summary: An integrated geological-petrophysical analysis was conducted on the rudist-bearing sequence of the Sarvak Formation in the Abadan Plain, SW Iran. The study aimed to evaluate the reservoir potential of the Sarvak Formation and correlate it with un-cored wells using calibrated well log signatures. Eight main facies were identified and categorized into five facies groups, deposited on a carbonate platform. Three diagenetic facies were differentiated based on the distribution of diagenetic products and their impact on pore systems. The study provides valuable insights for reservoir characterization of the Sarvak Formation and its equivalent units in the Arabian Plate.

Reservoir heterogeneity of Upper Cretaceous Sarvak Formation in the Dezful Embayment, SW Iran: Implications of flow unit distribution, electrofacies analysis and geological-based reservoir zonation

Javad Sobhani Foroshani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the origins, scale, and predictability of reservoir heterogeneities in the carbonates of the Upper Cretaceous Sarvak Formation in five oilfields in the Dezful Embayment. Facies analysis reveals fourteen microfacies types, indicating deposition on a ramp-like carbonate platform. Reservoir properties are controlled by marine, meteoric, and burial diagenetic processes. Large-to small-scale heterogeneities are differentiated and correlated within a chronostratigraphic context. The reservoir zones are formed within dissolved rudist-dominated facies, while non-reservoir units form within compacted and cemented mud-dominated facies. This geological-based heterogeneity model can be applied to reservoir models in the Dezful Embayment and the Zagros area.

Depositional and diagenetic controls on reservoir properties along the shallow-marine carbonates of the Sarvak Formation, Zagros Basin: Petrographic, petrophysical, and geochemical evidence

Hamzeh Mehrabi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the sedimentological, geochemical, and petrophysical analysis of the Sarvak Formation in the Abadan Plain, Zagros Basin. Petrographic studies have identified five microfacies, representing different depositional environments. Two depositional sequences from the Cenomanian-Turonian period have been differentiated based on biostratigraphic analysis. The effects of meteoric diagenesis, such as dissolution, brecciation, and silicification, have been observed. The reservoir quality of the Sarvak Formation is influenced by facies characteristics and meteoric diagenetic processes, which can be predicted within a high-resolution sequence stratigraphic framework.

Paleoenvironmental significance of the carbon isotope record across the Cenomanian-Turonian transition and the Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE2) in the southeastern Neotethys, Zagros, Iran

Borhan Bagherpour et al.

Summary: A high-resolution carbon isotope record from the Zagros Mountains in Iran reveals a 1.8‰ positive carbon isotope excursion (CIE) during the Cenomanian-Turonian transition in the southeastern Neotethys, corresponding to the Ocean Anoxic Event (OAE2). The CIE is characterized by a positive shift followed by a negative excursion, accompanied by high 818Ocarb values indicating a short-lived global cooling event, the Plenus Cold Event. The biostratigraphic positions of three diagnostic maximum points indicate synchronous 813Ccarb variability worldwide.

Geochemistry of Upper Cretaceous bauxite deposits, Zagros Fold Thrust Belt, SW Iran: Paleoenvironment and provenance constraints

Farhad Ahmadnejad et al.

Summary: Iranian's karst bauxites, part of the Irano-Himalayan bauxite belt, are associated with the Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt (ZFTB) and exhibit different compositions reflecting varied paleoenvironmental conditions. The composition of ooidal concretions in the bauxites indicates periods of humid tropical climate followed by intermittent dry-to-wet conditions. Ce/Ce* distribution in the bauxites suggests paleoredox evolution during bauxitization, with different patterns observed in different deposits. The provenance proxies indicate a UCC-like protolith for the ZFTB bauxite deposits, derived primarily from bedrock argillaceous sediments.

A qualitative-quantitative approach for studying the impact of facies and diagenesis control on the rudist biostrome of the Sarvak formation, Abadan plain, SW Iran

Mostafa Sabouhi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of facies and diagenesis processes on reservoir quality in the Sarvak formation of SW Iran. The results show that the grain-dominated facies are more intensively affected by diagenetic processes compared to the mud-dominated facies. Dissolution and neomorphism during meteoric diagenesis enhance reservoir quality, while further cementation, compaction, and micritization have a negative impact.

Summary: Providing a chronostratigraphic framework often faces challenges in shallow-marine carbonates with poor biostratigraphic resolution. This study demonstrates the integration of geochemical, sedimentological, and paleontological data to construct a reliable sequence stratigraphic framework in Cenomanian-Santonian neritic carbonates in SW Iran. The study highlights the diagenetic and geochemical expressions of paleoexposure surfaces and provides insights into the identification of erosional sequence boundaries using elemental concentrations, isotopic ratios, and Sr/Rb ratios. The study also reveals the durations of hiatuses and their correlation with other neritic sections in the region.

Scale, origin, and predictability of reservoir heterogeneities in shallow-marine carbonate sequences: A case from Cretaceous of Zagros, Iran

Hamzeh Mehrabi et al.

Summary: This study presents an integrated analysis of reservoir heterogeneity in an Iranian carbonate oil reservoir by considering both static and dynamic aspects. The results show that the large-scale reservoir heterogeneities are controlled by the spatial distribution of depositional facies and development of disconformable surfaces, while the small-scale heterogeneities are influenced by variations in microscopic characteristics. The study also identifies useful tools and methods for the discrimination of reservoir heterogeneities. It concludes that predicting the heterogeneities of carbonate reservoirs in a sequence stratigraphic framework is feasible and provides a reliable basis for reservoir modeling.

Depositional history of the uppermost Albian-Turonian Sarvak Formation in the Izeh Zone (SW Iran)

Behnaz Kalanat et al.

Summary: The study of the upper Albian-Turonian interval in the south of the Izeh Zone in Iran revealed the deposition of the Sarvak Formation in shallow water carbonate platforms surrounding intra-shelf basins. Three Cenomanian and one Turonian depositional sequences were identified based on microfacies associations, which can be correlated globally through biostratigraphic calibration using planktic foraminifera. The depositional sequences in the Lar Anticline section show the simultaneous influence of eustatic, tectonic, and environmental factors, with the eustatic factor being overprinted by tectonic controls such as paleo-depression, subsidence, and uplift.

An Atlas of Phanerozoic Paleogeographic Maps: The Seas Come In and the Seas Go Out

Christopher R. Scotese

Summary: Paleogeography studies the changing surface of Earth over time, affected by plate tectonics, climate, and weather. In the past 750 million years, continents have experienced latitudinal distribution changes, fluctuations in sea level, and mountain building and erosion, impacting global climate, ocean circulation, and life evolution. The maps in this review illustrate how Earth's surface has evolved through the formation and breakup of supercontinents, opening and closing of oceans, and continuous modifications by mountain building and erosion.
