Behavior of organic matter-hosted pores within shale gas reservoirs in response to differential tectonic deformation: Potential mechanisms and innovative conceptual models

Wei Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a multi-methodical approach was used to investigate the organic matter pore system in marine shale gas reservoirs in southern China. The results showed a gradual reduction in pore volume and specific surface areas, as well as changes in key parameters of the organic matter pores under different tectonic deformation conditions. The reactivation of seepage channels and intrusion of brittle minerals were proposed as the main microscopic mechanisms for explaining these pore changes. This research provides valuable insights into the structural characteristics and pore evolution processes of marine shale gas reservoirs.

Quantitative Characterization and Controlling Factors of Shallow Shale Reservoir in Taiyang Anticline, Zhaotong Area, China

Kai Ma et al.

Summary: This study conducted a detailed characterization of pore characteristics in 15 shallow marine shale samples using various methods, and established a petrophysical model to calculate porosity and fracture. The results showed that the primary pore types in shallow marine shale are mesopores and micropores, and the enrichment of total organic carbon and brittle minerals contributes to the development of the pore-fracture system.

Mineralogy and Geochemistry of the Upper Ordovician and Lower Silurian Wufeng-Longmaxi Shale on the Yangtze Platform, South China: Implications for Provenance Analysis and Shale Gas Sweet-Spot Interval

Zhensheng Shi et al.

Summary: The sediment provenance plays a role in the formation of the shale gas sweet-spot interval in the Yangtze Platform. The shale is mainly composed of quartz, calcite, dolomite, and clay minerals, with the sweet-spot interval having the highest content of quartz and organic carbon. The results suggest that the major sediment source rocks were acidic igneous rocks derived from the active continental margin and continental island arc.

Enrichment characteristics and exploration directions of deep shale gas of Ordovician-Silurian in the Sichuan Basin and its surrounding areas, China

Nie Haikuan et al.

Summary: The study found that the reservoir characteristics and enrichment conditions of deep shale gas are complex and diverse, requiring deeper geological understanding and the use of technology suitable for geological features. The LM1-LM3 marine-continental transition zone is the most favorable production interval, and deepwater areas are the main areas for deep shale gas enrichment.

Nanometer Pore Structure Characterization of Taiyuan Formation Shale in the Lin-Xing Area Based on Nitrogen Adsorption Experiments

Chenlong Ding et al.

Summary: The Ordos Basin in China is an important site for continental shale gas exploration, with the micropore structure of shale reservoirs being crucial for evaluation. The Taiyuan Formation of the lower Permian is the main interval for exploration, particularly in the Lin-Xing area of Northern Shaanxi. Analysis of nitrogen adsorption experiments revealed dominant mesopores and macropores in the pore structure, with some micropores. There was no notable linear correlation between total organic carbon, vitrinite reflectance, quartz content, clay mineral content, and the specific surface area and total pore volume of the shale.
