Cyclic Stability of Superelasticity in [001]-Oriented Quenched Ni44Fe19Ga27Co10 and Ni39Fe19Ga27Co15 Single Crystals

E. E. Timofeeva et al.

Summary: The influence of cobalt content on the cyclic stability of superelasticity was investigated in Ni44Fe19Ga27Co10 and Ni39Fe19Ga27Co15 (at%) single crystals. Increasing cobalt content led to embrittlement and decreased cyclic stability. In Ni44Fe19Ga27Co10 crystals, elastic energy relaxation, dislocation formation and residual martensite occurred during the first 20 cycles, resulting in a decrease in critical stress and stress hysteresis. In Ni39Fe19Ga27Co15 crystals, high-strength characteristics provided high stability for the first 20 cycles, but degradation occurred due to the formation of microcracks.

Superelastic behavior and elastocaloric effect in a Ni51.5Fe21.5Ga27.0 ferromagnetic shape memory single crystal under compression

F. Masdeu et al.

Summary: Ni51.5Fe21.5Ga27.0 single crystals were heat treated to obtain different degrees of L21 ordering. The mechanical behavior of the material in compression mode showed a strong dependence on axis orientation. Superelasticity was perfect in the [001] direction over a wide range of temperatures, while brittle fracture occurred in the [110] orientation above the austenite transformation finish temperature. The microstructure after mechanical tests revealed local microplastic deformation of the martensitic phase. The adiabatic cooling effect was characterized and found to be higher in the [110] orientation compared to the [001] orientation at 240 K.

Effects of aging on the stress-induced martensitic transformation and cyclic superelastic properties in Co-Ni-Ga shape memory alloy single crystals under compression

C. Lauhoff et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of aging treatments on the martensitic transformation and functional properties of Co-Ni-Ga shape memory alloys. The formation of nanoparticles is shown to strongly influence the selection and morphology of martensite, with larger particles promoting irreversibility and smaller particles enhancing functional stability.

High performance damping behavior of Ni-Fe-Ga alloys within the martensite/strain-glass phase boundary

Chunxi Hao et al.

Summary: This study reports the damping characteristics of Ni73-xFexGa27 strain glass alloys over a broad ambient temperature range. The damping capacity of the alloys increases as the compositions approach the martensite/strain-glass phase boundary, with a maximum value (approximately 0.12) achieved in the Ni(49.5)Fe(23.5)G(27) strain glass alloy within the phase boundary. The boundaries of martensitic nano-domains are highly mobile in the phase boundary region, resulting in broad and high damping peaks around ambient temperature.

Two-way shape memory effect in Ni49Fe18Ga27Co6 ferromagnetic shape memory single crystals

F. Masdeu et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the two-way shape memory effect induced in Ni49Fe18Ga27Co6 (at%) ferromagnetic shape memory single crystals. It was found that a short superelastic cycling in compression along the [001] direction at increasing temperatures up to 453 K is enough to induce fully reversible TWSME. Trained samples showed a very good correlation between martensite reorientation tests and thermal transformation under antagonistic stress.
