Corrosion-resistant WC-Co based cemented carbides: Computational design and experimental verification

Tingting Tang et al.

Summary: Elemental modification was utilized to enhance the performance of cemented carbides for offshore drilling. WC-Co-Al cemented carbides were designed and tested for their corrosion resistance based on phase diagram and Pourbaix diagram calculations. Experimental results showed improved corrosion resistance with the increase of Al content to 0.8 wt%. Corrosion products were in agreement with the calculated Pourbaix diagram. This research strategy enables efficient design of corrosion-resistant cemented carbides.

Novel Mo-modified medium entropy alloys achieving enhanced corrosion resistance in acidic solution

Zhimin Pan et al.

Summary: The effect of adding Mo on the corrosion behavior of (CoNiV)100_xMox medium entropy alloys (MEAs) in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution was investigated. Results showed that despite the precipitation of the second phase, the introduction of Mo through micro alloying can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of CoNiV MEA. Furthermore, the competition effect between microgalvanic coupling and micro alloying in dominating the corrosion resistance of (CoNiV)100_xMox MEAs was discussed in detail.

Comparative Study of Corrosion Behaviors of WC-NiMo and WC-Co Cemented Carbides

Nadia Alves Nery Balbino et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of nickel binder metal and molybdenum carbide as additional alloying elements on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of WC-based cemented carbides. Comparison with conventional WC-Co cemented carbide was conducted. Various analysis techniques were used to characterize the sintered alloys, before and after corrosive tests. The results showed that the WC-NiMo cemented carbide exhibited similar microstructures to WC-Co, but with observed pores and binder islands. The corrosion tests demonstrated superior corrosion resistance and higher passivation capacity in the WC-NiMo cemented carbide compared to WC-Co, as evidenced by various electrochemical measurements.

Corrosion Resistance of Nanostructured Cemented Carbides with Alternative FeNi and FeNiCo Binders

Tamara Aleksandrov Fabijanic et al.

Summary: Nanostructured cemented carbides with Co binders have excellent mechanical properties but insufficient corrosion resistance. In this study, WC-based cemented carbide samples with different binders were produced and investigated for their corrosion behavior. The results showed that samples with FeNi binders exhibited superior corrosion resistance compared to those with FeNiCo binders, especially in acidic medium.

Corrosion behavior of functionally graded cemented carbides with CoNiCrFe binder

Cheng Qian et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of functionally graded cemented carbide (FGCC), with CoNiCrFe binder (WC-CoNiCrFe), was investigated. In alkaline and acidic solutions, the CoNiCrFe binder was selectively dissolved. In the NaOH solution, a passive film consisting of Co(OH)2, Ni(OH)2, Co3O4, and NiO effectively isolated the corrosive medium, but Fe and Cr contents were insufficient for protection. In the HCl solution, Cr0, Cr2O3, and Cr(OH)3 were generated, but the low Cr content hindered passive film formation. The FGCC with lower binder content and denser WC distribution exhibited higher corrosion resistance.

Electrochemical and passivation behavior of a corrosion-resistant WC-Ni (W) cemented carbide in synthetic mine water

J. Jayaraj et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the microstructure, binder composition, and corrosion behavior of WC-20 vol.% Ni and WC-20 vol.% Co cemented carbides. The results showed that both grades have similar WC grain sizes, and the binder phase of each grade is an alloy of Ni-W and Co-W. WC-Ni(W) exhibited high corrosion resistance due to the formation of an extremely thin WO3 passive film.
