Finite element investigation of residual stresses during laser powder deposition process as an innovative technique to repair worn rails

Ershad Mortazavian et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of laser powder deposition (LPD) to repair damaged metal components. The effects of deposition material and preheating temperature on residual stress are studied through finite element modeling. The results show that proper preheating significantly reduces the residual stresses, and Stellite 21 is identified as the most promising deposition steel.

Effect of material non-uniformity and residual stress on wear and transient rolling contact behaviour in laminar plasma quenched (LPQ) rails

Kai Wang et al.

Summary: Laminar plasma discrete quenching can improve wear resistance of rails by forming a hardened layer, but it may also lead to cracks and spalling. This study develops a finite element model to analyze the mechanical properties of quenched rails, and finds that material inhomogeneity and residual stress contribute to micro-cracking.

Influence of multi-layer laser cladding depositions and rail curvature on residual stress in light rail components

Olivia Kendall et al.

Summary: The rapid deterioration of critical rail components due to wear and fatigue poses a significant challenge for the railway industry. Laser cladding using Stellite 21 hardfacing alloy has been successfully employed to mitigate degradation in straight and curved light rail substrates. The study analyzed the influence of multi-layer cladding, grinding-based finishing procedures, and rail grade on residual stress using non-destructive neutron diffraction techniques. The findings highlight the importance of ensuring compatibility between laser cladding and various light rail components to develop effective maintenance techniques and avoid disruptive replacement procedures.

Investigation of residual stress and optimization of welding process parameters to decrease tensile residual stress in the flash butt welded UIC60 rail

Mohsen Ghazanfari et al.

Summary: In this study, numerical simulation is used to determine the residual stress of the flash butt joint in the UIC60 rail. The influence of phase transformation is considered to accurately predict critical locations of tensile residual stress. The most effective parameters of the flash butt welding process are optimized to reduce critical tensile residual stresses in the weldment, aiming to minimize the possibility of failure in the welded rail.

Influence of welding residual stress on subsurface fatigue crack propagation of rail

Xiu-Yang Fang et al.

Summary: By predicting the distribution of residual stress of welded rail and comparing the results, this study accurately evaluated the influence of welding residual stress on the fatigue crack propagation behavior of rail. The results showed significant differences in the subsurface crack type, path, rate, and lifetime between the cases with and without residual stress.

Experimental investigation on the rail residual stress distribution and its influence on the bending fatigue resistance of rails

Chongjie Kang et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental study on the residual stress distribution of 60E2 (UIC 60) rails, and its influence on the rail bending fatigue resistance. The results show that the residual stress distribution is decisive when determining rail fatigue resistance, and rail bending fatigue resistance exhibits good mean-stress dependency when considering the actual residual stress distribution.

Structural fatigue investigation of thermite welded rail joints considering weld-induced residual stress and stress relaxation by cyclic load

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: This study developed a structural fatigue life prediction model for thermite welded rail joints, utilizing a three-dimensional finite element model to investigate residual stresses and stress redistribution under cyclic loading. The results showed that failure to consider residual stress and relaxation could lead to an overestimation of fatigue crack propagation life by at least 50%.
