Global, regional and national burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease over a 30-year period: Estimates from the 1990 to 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study

Hao-Yang Li et al.

Summary: We investigated the burden of COPD globally over the past 30 years and found that the incidence of COPD has increased, with higher rates in men and variations among different age groups. However, overall, the incidence, mortality, and DALY rates of COPD have declined, with the highest burden observed in low-middle sociodemographic index (SDI) regions.

Discriminative Accuracy of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Screening Instruments in 3 Low- and Middle-Income Country Settings

Trishul Siddharthan et al.

Summary: This study assessed the discriminative accuracy of three screening tools for COPD in three low- and middle-income countries using questionnaires and peak expiratory flow (PEF). The results showed that these screening tools were feasible to administer in the study sites. However, further research is needed to assess the performance of these tools in other low- and middle-income settings and determine if their implementation can lead to improved clinical outcomes.

Summary: A new case-finding questionnaire, UCAP-Q, was developed and validated to identify symptomatic adults with undiagnosed obstructive lung disease. The questionnaire showed high sensitivities and AUCs for identifying undiagnosed asthma or COPD. A web-based calculator is available for easy calculation of risk probabilities.

Comparability of portable and desktop spirometry: a randomized, parallel assignment, open-label clinical trial

Piotr W. Boros et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of a new portable spirometer, AioCare(R), by comparing it with a reference desktop spirometer. The results showed a high correlation in various spirometry measurements between the portable and reference spirometers. This indicates that the portable spirometer may serve as a complementary tool in the daily, remote management of patients with lung diseases.

Disease burden in individuals with symptomatic undiagnosed asthma or COPD

Fatmah F. Alhabeeb et al.

Summary: This study compared healthcare utilization, burden of symptoms, and quality of life in individuals with self-reported respiratory symptoms who were subsequently found to have undiagnosed airflow obstruction to those without airflow obstruction. The results showed that undiagnosed asthma and COPD are common in Canadian adults experiencing breathing problems and are associated with a greater burden of symptoms and poorer health-related quality of life.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prevalence, risk factors, and population attributable risk (PAR) of early chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) among Hispanic/Latino individuals in the United States. The results showed that asthma, smoking, and chronic sinusitis were important risk factors for early COPD in this population, while immigrants had a lower risk compared to U.S.-born individuals.
