First report of complete mitochondrial genome in the subfamily Alleculinae and mitochondrial genome-based phylogenetics in Tenebrionidae (Coleoptera: Tenebrionoidea)

Chuan Wu et al.

Summary: This study sequenced and annotated the mitochondrial genomes of 12 species within the Tenebrionidae family, revealing gene composition, order, characteristics, and phylogenetic relationships within the family. The results show that certain subfamilies and tribes within Tenebrionidae are monophyletic, while others are polyphyletic.

Hydrocarbon-based plastics: Progress and perspectives on consumption and biodegradation by insect larvae

Andressa F. Pivato et al.

Summary: There is a significant contrast between the durability and consumption of plastic products, leading to the deposition of at least 100 million tons of plastics in nature each year. Insect larvae have been found to have higher potential for biodegrading different types of plastics, especially lepidopteran larvae for polyethylene (PE) and coleopteran larvae for polystyrene (PS). The biodegradation of plastic by insects is dependent on microbial activity.

First complete mitochondrial genomes of Ototretinae (Coleoptera, Lampyridae) with evolutionary insights into the gene rearrangement

Xue-Ying Ge et al.

Summary: This study focuses on an important and unusual subfamily of fireflies, Ototretinae. The authors sequenced and annotated three mitogenomes from this subfamily and discovered a novel gene rearrangement in the Stenocladius species. The phylogenetic analyses also revealed some discrepancies in the evolutionary relationship within the Ototretinae subfamily, requiring further investigation.

Characterization of the First Complete Mitochondrial Genome of Cyphonocerinae (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) with Implications for Phylogeny and Evolution of Fireflies

Xueying Ge et al.

Summary: The classification of Lampyridae remains debated, with recent efforts shedding light on the relationships of fireflies. The first complete mitochondrial genome for Cyphonocerinae was generated and comparative analyses showed its conservation compared to other firefly species. Phylogenetic analyses suggested Cyphonocerinae's independent lineage closely related to Drilaster, emphasizing the importance of more species in phylogenetic reconstructions.

Yu Bai et al.

Summary: The genus Morphostenophanes is a small arboreal group of darkling beetles endemic to the Oriental region. The complete mitochondrial genome of the M. sinicus population from Manwan Town was characterized for the first time, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes with a total length of 15,662 bp.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
