Encoding, transmission, decoding, and specificity of calcium signals in plants

Claudia Allan et al.

Summary: This review discusses recent technological advances and computational frameworks for studying the specificity of calcium signaling in plant cells. Calcium plays a role in signal and information transmission in all eukaryotes, and there are various mechanisms and proteins involved in the encoding, transmission, and decoding of calcium signals. Recent developments in imaging technology and genetically encoded sensors have provided new insights into intra- and intercellular calcium signaling. The review highlights the current gaps in understanding and proposes techniques and approaches for unraveling the underlying mechanisms.

Calmodulin and calmodulin-like gene family in barley: Identification, characterization and expression analyses

Kangfeng Cai et al.

Summary: Calmodulin (CaM) and calmodulin-like (CML) proteins play crucial roles in plant growth, development, and stress responses. In this study, the HvCaMs and HvCMLs were identified in barley through genome-wide analysis. These genes showed variations in structure, expression patterns, and evolutionary history. Some of them were identified as core genes, while others were dispensable genes. Furthermore, the expression of selected HvCaM/CML genes was found to be stress- and time-dependent. These findings contribute to a better understanding and further functional identification of HvCaMs/CMLs.

Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of calmodulin and calmodulin-like genes in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Yongwei Liu et al.

Summary: Calmodulin (CaM) and calmodulin-like (CML) genes play important roles in plant growth and stress response. In wheat, 18 TaCaM and 230 TaCML genes were identified, classified into 7 subfamilies. These genes are located on all 21 chromosomes, with most gene clusters containing 3 homoeologous genes. TaCaM/TaCML genes show tissue-specific expression patterns, with some genes being up-regulated by abiotic stresses in roots or shoots.

Genomic insights into the fast growth of paulownias and the formation of Paulownia witches' broom

Yabing Cao et al.

Summary: Paulownias are one of the fastest growing trees in the world, but often suffer significant loss of wood production due to infection by Paulownia witches' broom phytoplasmas. This study sequenced and assembled the nuclear genome of Paulownia fortunei, revealing insights into its rapid growth habit and regulatory mechanisms for PaWB formation. Comparative transcriptome analyses identified modules related to cambial growth and development, photosynthesis, and defense responses.
