Beyond circadian rhythms: emerging roles of ultradian rhythms in control of liver functions

Gad Asher et al.

Summary: This article reviews the basic principles of circadian rhythms and the recent research progress in hepatic ultradian rhythms. It discusses the prevalence and mechanisms of hepatic 12-hour rhythms and 8-hour rhythms, as well as other frequencies of ultradian rhythms. The limitations of current approaches and the challenges in identifying and understanding the molecular basis of ultradian rhythms are also examined.

Twelve-hour rhythms in transcript expression within the human dorsolateral prefrontal cortex are altered in schizophrenia

Madeline R. R. Scott et al.

Summary: Twelve-hour ultradian rhythms were found in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of human brain, with genes peaking at sleep/wake transitions or static times. In individuals with schizophrenia, these rhythms were disrupted in genes associated with unfolded protein response and neuronal structural maintenance. Additionally, genes involved in mitochondrial function and protein translation peaked at static times in schizophrenia, suggesting suboptimal timing of essential processes.

Co-expression of diurnal and ultradian rhythms in the plasma metabolome of common voles (Microtus arvalis)

Andreas Psomas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metabolic rhythms in the plasma metabolome of voles and found that there were both 24-hour circadian rhythms and faster 2-4 hour ultradian rhythms. These ultradian rhythms were synchronized with the circadian rhythms and were not aligned with meal timing, indicating their importance in metabolic regulation.

Multiscale Time-resolved Analysis Reveals Remaining Behavioral Rhythms in Mice Without Canonical Circadian Clocks

Megan Morris et al.

Summary: Circadian rhythms are internal processes in living organisms that repeat approximately every 24 hours and are synchronized to the light-dark cycle. This study investigated the rhythmic components and phase coupling in mice with a disabled circadian clock. The findings provide insights into the functional significance of different oscillators and their coupling. Understanding circadian rhythms is crucial for studying diseases and mood disorders.

Summary: This study investigates the changes in biological rhythms of free-ranging brown bears over an annual cycle, focusing on the differences during hibernation compared to the active state. The results show that brown bears adjust their biological rhythms to the seasonal environment they inhabit.

Coupling-dependent metabolic ultradian rhythms in confluent cells

Shuzhang Yang et al.

Summary: This study reports the discovery of temperature-sensitive ultradian rhythms in mammalian fibroblasts, which are independent of the cell cycle and circadian clock. These ultradian rhythms are synchronized through cellular coupling and metabolic feedback mechanisms, and play a role in balancing energy demands in cells.

A new ultradian rhythm in mammalian cell dry mass observed by holography

Lamya Ghenim et al.

Summary: A new 4-hour ultradian rhythm has been discovered during the interphase of the cell cycle, detected in various individual mammalian cells using holographic lens-free microscopy. This rhythm is independent of the circadian rhythm, and provides a way to quantify the effects of chemical reagents on cells through the amplitude of the fundamental frequency. It represents a massive degradation and re-synthesis of protein every 4 hours in proliferating cells, and is suppressed by proteostasis disruptors.

Negative Energy Balance Enhances Ultradian Rhythmicity in Spring-Programmed Voles

Laura van Rosmalen et al.

Summary: Voles can exhibit both circadian and ultradian rhythms, with the latter potentially influenced by energy balance. Experimental manipulation revealed that negative energy balance induces ultradian rhythms in voles, while a positive correlation between ultradian period length and workload was observed in tundra voles.
