Strategies and Tools for Supporting the Appropriateness of Drug Use in Older People

Summary: This article provides an updated description of strategies and tools to improve appropriateness of drug use in older adults by reviewing published literature. The effectiveness and sustainability of each strategy and tool largely depend on local and heterogeneous experiences, resulting in contrasting results. Three main steps, prescription, patient acceptance, and continuous monitoring, should be considered in improving appropriateness. The appropriateness support also depends on the specific care setting and available resources.

The Elderly's Thoughts and Attitudes about Polypharmacy and Deprescribing: A Qualitative Pilot Study in Portugal

Summary: The high prevalence of polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medications in the elderly makes them a vulnerable group to adverse drug events. Deprescribing is the medication review plus cessation of potentially inappropriate medications with a health professional's help. Understanding the Portuguese elderly's attitudes and ideas about polypharmacy and deprescription can provide valuable insights for health professionals. The study used a qualitative approach and identified several barriers and enablers influencing deprescribing among the elderly.

Medication adherence in community-dwelling older people exposed to chronic polypharmacy

Participation in experimental healthcare programs is associated with higher adherence, while being coprescribed with >= 10 drugs is linked to lower adherence across all drug classes.

Prevalence of Chronic Polypharmacy in Community-Dwelling Elderly People in Poland: Analysis of National Real-World Database Helps to Identify High Risk Group

Summary: This study revealed that 19.1% of elderly population in Poland were undergoing chronic polypharmacy, with an average age of 76 years old, and 68.6% of them continued this treatment for the entire year. Patients with chronic polypharmacy obtained prescriptions from an average of 4.5 different healthcare professionals, and took an average of 8.3 drugs per day.
