Maternal electronic cigarette use during pregnancy affects long-term arterial function in offspring

Eiman Aboaziza et al.

Summary: The use of electronic cigarettes by pregnant women can have adverse effects on the cardiovascular health of their offspring, even when using nicotine-free e-cigarettes. Exposure to maternal vaping during the perinatal period can lead to long-lasting dysfunction in the offspring's cardiovascular system.

Maternal e-cigarette use can disrupt postnatal blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity and deteriorates motor, learning and memory function: influence of sex and age

Sabrina Rahman Archie et al.

Summary: Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), commonly known as electronic cigarettes (e-cigs), are popular among various age groups and genders as a safer alternative to tobacco smoking. However, the long-term effects of prenatal e-cig exposure on postnatal health are not well understood. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of maternal e-cig use on postnatal blood-brain barrier integrity and behavioral outcomes in mice. The findings showed that prenatal e-cig exposure disrupted BBB integrity and impaired motor, learning, and memory functions of the offspring.

Biological determinants impact the neurovascular toxicity of nicotine and tobacco smoke: A pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics perspective

Sabrina Rahman Archie et al.

Summary: The detrimental effects of nicotine on the central nervous system are caused by its neurotoxic role on blood-brain barrier permeability, nicotinic acetylcholine receptor expression, and the dopaminergic system. Sex and age are important biological determinants that can affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of nicotine. Understanding the impact of sex and age on nicotine-induced neurotoxicity can help develop personalized treatment strategies for mitigating the harmful effects of nicotine.

Alterations of Mitochondrial Network by Cigarette Smoking and E-Cigarette Vaping

Manasa Kanithi et al.

Summary: Toxins present in cigarette and e-cigarette smoke have fatal health impacts, especially on cell repair and mitochondrial function. Research suggests that these toxins trigger abnormal responses, damage mitochondrial function, and disrupt biochemical processes. Developing effective treatments is of prime importance.

The Impact of Tobacco Cigarettes, Vaping Products and Tobacco Heating Products on Oxidative Stress

Rosalia Emma et al.

Summary: Cells constantly produce oxidizing species through their metabolic activity, which is countered by the production of antioxidant species. Smoking is a major exogenous source of these species. Next-generation products like electronic cigarettes and tobacco heating products are proposed as alternatives to reduce the harmful effects of smoking. Tobacco smoke has been established to have significant impact on oxidative stress signaling, while further research is needed to understand the long-term oxidative effects of these alternative products.

Maternal smoking-induced lung injuries in dams and offspring via inflammatory cytokines

Xiaotong Ji et al.

Summary: The study reanalyzed differentially expressed genes in maternal and offspring lungs, revealing that DEGs in maternal lungs were enriched in immune-related functions, while those in offspring lungs were enriched in cell growth. By screening shared differential genes, maternal genes alone can predict the lung injuries in offspring induced by maternal smoking.

Summary: The study found that PG/G without nicotine increased levels of oxidative damage biomarkers in the lungs and plasma of mice, and e-cigarettes can cause more severe lung injury than tobacco smoke. This research data contributes to a better understanding of the impact of e-cigarettes on pulmonary oxidative stress and inflammation.

PSD-95 protects synapses from β-amyloid

Summary: The study found that increased PSD-95 can protect synapses from the toxic effects of A beta, suggesting that low levels of PSD-95 may be a molecular sign of synapse vulnerability to A beta. Inhibition of PSD-95 depalmitoylation pharmacologically may offer a therapeutic avenue against Alzheimer's disease.

Nicotine Causes Mitochondrial Dynamics Imbalance and Apoptosis Through ROS Mediated Mitophagy Impairment in Cardiomyocytes

Summary: Nicotine exposure leads to increased superoxide production, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, and impaired mitophagic flux, promoting mitochondrial fission and apoptosis. Torin1 may restore CTSL enzyme activity and regulate the ROS/p38/JNK signaling pathway to alleviate nicotine-induced effects on mitochondrial dynamics.

Electronic cigarette aerosols induce oxidative stress-dependent cell death and NF-κB mediated acute lung inflammation in mice

Tiancong Ma et al.

Summary: The use of e-cigarettes is associated with acute lung injury in the United States, with toxicity partly attributed to reactive oxygen species and aldehydes generated during aerosolization. Cell and animal studies show that e-cigarette samples induce oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and cell death.
