Effects of prenatal exposure to THC on hippocampal neural development in offspring

Hao Peng et al.

Summary: This study found that prenatal exposure to THC, the main psychoactive component of cannabis, affected fetal nervous system development. The offspring of pregnant mice treated with THC showed differences in neuronal cell composition and gene expression related to neurogenesis and neural differentiation. Further experiments confirmed that THC affected the proliferation and differentiation capacity of neural stem cells (NSCs) and regulated the MEF2C pathway through the cannabinoid receptor CB1R. Pre-treatment with a CB1R inhibitor reversed the effects of THC on NSC differentiation and restored MEF2C expression.

Cannabidiol's neuroprotective properties and potential treatment of traumatic brain injuries

Mackenzie M. Aychman et al.

Summary: Cannabidiol (CBD) has potential therapeutic effects against the secondary injury cascade from traumatic brain injury (TBI) by initiating anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and antiepileptic properties. The lack of effective broad treatment strategies for TBI highlights the importance of CBD's mechanistic support in countering the damaging mechanisms and providing neuroprotective benefits. Future clinical research and ongoing clinical trials are necessary to further examine CBD's efficacy in TBI treatment protocols.

Effect of Cannabis on Memory Consolidation, Learning and Retrieval and Its Current Legal Status in India: A Review

Nandi Niloy et al.

Summary: Cannabis, an ancient crop with religious and medicinal uses in various cultures, has shown beneficial effects in neurocognitive diseases through preclinical and clinical investigations. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component, impairs cognition, while non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) has neuroprotective effects. This integrative review focuses on the effects of cannabis on learning, consolidation, and retrieval, and highlights the legal position of cannabis in India and the need for reforms.

Medical Cannabis for Chronic Nonmalignant Pain Management

Maha Hameed et al.

Summary: This review article examines the use of medical cannabis for chronic nonmalignant pain management. Recent research shows that medical cannabis can effectively manage symptoms of various conditions including cancer, chronic pain, headaches, migraines, and psychological disorders. The active ingredients THC and CBD in cannabis work through the endocannabinoid system to reduce pain sensation and symptom frequency. Medical cannabis provides convenient and effective pain management for patients with chronic nonmalignant pain.

The Polypharmacological Effects of Cannabidiol

Jorge Castillo-Arellano et al.

Summary: Cannabidiol (CBD) is a major phytocannabinoid found in Cannabis sativa (Linneo, 1753), which does not have intoxicating effects and differs from the psychoactive Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC). However, our understanding of the neuro-molecular mechanisms and complex pharmacology of CBD is still limited. This article provides a comprehensive review of the molecular targets and pharmacological implications of CBD in various animal models and human diseases, highlighting its potential therapeutic effects in epilepsy, pain, neuropsychiatric disorders, Alzheimer's disease, and inflammatory diseases. The compiled knowledge from in vitro and in vivo studies is crucial for a better understanding of the polypharmacological nature of CBD.

Summary: CBD has been shown to attenuate memory deficits induced by ischemia and reduce neurodegeneration in the hippocampal CA1 region, while also increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels. Additionally, CBD protects neurons against the negative effects of ischemia on dendritic spine number and dendritic arborization length. These findings suggest that the neuroprotective effects of CBD on ischemia-induced memory impairments involve synaptic plasticity changes in the hippocampus.
