Cell-Type-Specific Adaptions in Striatal Medium-Sized Spiny Neurons and Their Roles in Behavioral Responses to Drugs of Abuse

Marie-Charlotte Allichon et al.

Summary: Drug addiction is characterized by compulsive drug-seeking and drug-taking behavior, with recurrent cycles of abstinence and relapse despite negative consequences. Dopamine and glutamate play crucial roles in shaping the neural circuits involved in reward processing and addiction. Research on how dopamine and glutamate modulate specific inputs onto different neuronal populations within the reward circuitry sheds light on the molecular mechanisms underlying pathological behaviors associated with drug addiction. Such cell-type-specific molecular studies hold potential for developing innovative strategies for addiction treatment.

The last two decades on preclinical and clinical research on inhalant effects

Silvia L. Cruz et al.

Summary: This paper reviews scientific evidence on the effects and mechanisms of action of commonly misused inhalants over the past two decades. It covers the definition, prevalence, characteristics, acute and chronic effects, and treatment of inhalant use. The paper also proposes a research agenda to further study the effects of inhalant use.

Inactivation mode of sodium channels defines the different maximal firing rates of conventional versus atypical midbrain dopamine neurons

Christopher J. Knowlton et al.

Summary: Two subpopulations of midbrain dopamine neurons, the conventional and atypical populations, exhibit different dynamic ranges and projection targets in vitro. The major difference lies in the gating of voltage-gated sodium channels, resulting in lower maximum frequency for the conventional population.
