T. K. Krishnapriya et al.

Summary: Developing an ultrafast folic acid sensor for biomedical FA sensing, with a detection limit and range in the nanomolar levels, is highly significant. Luminescent carbon dots (CDs) are synthesized using hydrothermal method and the precursors of anhydrous citric acid and ethylenediamine. The prepared CDs show spherical morphology with an average size of 2.8 nm. Photoluminescence quenching-based technique is utilized for FA detection, achieving a detection limit of 6 nM and a detection range of 0-50 nM. The mechanism of static quenching between CDs and FA is confirmed and the binding mechanism is explained using Raman spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), FTIR, and for the first time. The practicality of the CD probe is evaluated by imaging N2a cells and testing FA in plasma samples from albino rats, with validation using a clinical method.
