Conjugation of plasmid harboring blaNDM-1 in a clinical Providencia rettgeri strain through the formation of a fusion plasmid

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: Whole-genome sequence and pan-genome analysis of a multidrug-resistant P. rettgeri 18004577 clinical strain from a hospitalized patient in Shandong, China revealed a 4.6 Mb genome assembly size with a circular plasmid harboring a multidrug-resistant region and an IncT plasmid. Various resistance genes, including bla(NDM-1), were identified. The bla(NDM-1) gene could be transferred via a novel hybrid plasmid formation process. The diversity of resistance genes in this strain highlights the need for strict infection control and resistance surveillance policies.

Genome-Based Retrospective Analysis of a Providencia stuartii Outbreak in Rome, Italy: Broad Spectrum IncC Plasmids Spread the NDM Carbapenemase within the Hospital

Valerio Capitani et al.

Summary: This article reports a four-patient outbreak caused by Providencia stuartii in a hospital in Rome. Phenotypic analysis and whole-genome sequencing revealed highly related strains with XDR characteristics. The strains carried various virulence factors and resistance genes, which were found on plasmids similar to those found in previous Klebsiella pneumoniae strains in the same hospital. The emergence of XDR P. stuartii strains poses a significant public health threat, and monitoring their spread and developing new control and treatment strategies is crucial.

Empirically derived sequence similarity thresholds to study the genomic epidemiology of plasmids shared among healthcare-associated bacterial pathogens

Daniel Evans et al.

Summary: This study aimed to systematically resolve and track plasmids carried by nosocomial pathogens in a single hospital using whole-genome sequencing. It found that horizontal transfer of plasmids among healthcare-associated bacterial pathogens appears to be frequent within hospitals and can be monitored with whole genome sequencing and comparative genomics approaches. These approaches should incorporate both nucleotide identity and reference sequence coverage to study the dynamics of plasmid transfer in the hospital.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the methylation features of Klebsiella pneumoniae and identified 15 methylation motifs. The distribution patterns of these motifs in the genome were analyzed and the methylation dynamics were characterized at single-base resolution. The findings provide useful insights into the epigenetic regulation of K. pneumoniae and other bacterial species.

Genetic Characterization of Four Groups of Chromosome-Borne Accessory Genetic Elements Carrying Drug Resistance Genes in Providencia

Jiayao Guan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the diversification of accessory genetic elements (AGEs) in Providencia and their impact on the accumulation and distribution of drug resistance genes. Through genome sequencing and analysis of five Providencia isolates from China, the study identified 17 AGEs with complex modular structures and a high level of diversification. These AGEs contained at least 52 drug resistance genes, contributing to the multidrug resistance of Providencia isolates.

Genomic Epidemiology of Carbapenemase- producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in China

Cuidan Li et al.

Summary: The dissemination of carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (cpKP) is driven by specific combinations of host-blaKPC-carrying plasmids, which are associated with strong population expansion in 2007-2008. This study provides insights into the molecular epidemiology and genetic basis for the spread of ST11/CG258 cpKP in China.

Genomic analysis of the nomenclatural type strain of the nematode-associated entomopathogenic bacterium Providencia vermicola

Giuseppe Andolfo et al.

Summary: The newly reported genome sequence of P. vermicola DSM_17385 will serve as a well-supported reference for comparative genomics studies on Providencia bacteria. The presence of potential antibiotic resistance-associated genes in the P. vermicola DSM_17385 genome is noted, although unlike clinical Providencia strains, no plasmids carrying antibiotic resistance genes or mobile genetic elements causing multidrug resistance phenomena were identified, suggesting that P. vermicola in its natural environment may not be prone to acquiring such genetic elements.
