Stretching, Shaking, Inflating: Volcanic-Tectonic Interactions at a Rifting Silicic Caldera

James D. Muirhead et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the magmatic-tectonic processes associated with volcanic unrest at silicic calderas. Short-term deformation patterns, such as uplift, subsidence, seismic activity, and ground shaking, are observed, while long-term behavior shows suppression of axial subsidence of the rift basin due to magma influx. Silicic volcanic eruptions are characterized by intense syn-eruptive deformation, extending beyond the caldera structure.

Integrating LiDAR to unravel the volcanic architecture and eruptive history of the peralkaline Tu over line hua (Mayor Island) volcano, New Zealand

Szabolcs Kosik et al.

Summary: This study presents a revised geological map, stratigraphic framework, and geological history of Tu over bar hua (Mayor Island), based on existing work, digital elevation model, bathymetry, and field observations. The findings suggest that the 7.6 ka eruption is not related to the collapse of the C2 caldera as previously thought, but rather to the newly identified C3 crater. The collapse of the C2 caldera is attributed to magma inflation and drawdown. The dominance of hydrovolcanism for explosive activity and the explosive interaction between magma and water are identified as important factors for future eruptions.

Taupo: an overview of New Zealand's youngest supervolcano

Simon J. Barker et al.

Summary: Taupo volcano in New Zealand is known as the source of Earth's youngest supereruption, which occurred around 25.5 thousand years ago. Over a period of approximately 350,000 years, Taupo has experienced eruptions of various sizes, styles, and landscape responses. In the modern era, Taupo volcano experiences unrest every decade or so, but uncertainties remain regarding the nature of the magma reservoir and the processes driving unrest or eruptive activity.

Shallow subaqueous to emergent intra-caldera silicic volcanism of the Motuoapa Peninsula, Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand-New constraints from geologic mapping, sedimentology and zircon geochronology

Szabolcs Kosik et al.

Summary: Research on the Motuoapa Peninsula in New Zealand revealed that volcanic activity occurred in two distinct eruptive episodes separated by around 45,000 years. The earlier eruption is believed to have started in a shallow subaqueous environment, forming a new volcanic cone through breccias and tuff breccias. The final phase of volcanic activity was characterized by the emplacement of viscous lava that breached the crater rim and flowed onto the southeast sector of the pyroclastic cone.
