Synergistic effect of Mn3+and oxygen vacancy on the bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic performance of MnOX/CNTs composites

Minghua He et al.

Summary: In this study, manganese oxide/carbon nanotube (MnOx/CNTs) composites were prepared as a conductive electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The effects of mass ratio, calcination temperature, and oxidation degree on the ORR activity were investigated. The results showed that MnO2/CNTs exhibited better electrocatalytic activity than manganese dioxide (MnO2) and CNTs when the mass ratio of CNTs to MnO2 was 60%. Moreover, after calcination and reduction treatment, the obtained MnOX/CNTs-400 composite showed significantly enhanced ORR and OER bifunctional catalytic activity, as well as higher methanol tolerance and long-term stability compared to commercial Pt/C catalyst.

Ultrafast Thermal Synthesis of Non-Noble Metal-Based Electrocatalysts for Overall Water Splitting

Sunhyeong Park et al.

Summary: Non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts have attracted extensive interest for their low cost, abundance, and high catalytic performance. In this study, an ultrafast thermal method was used to synthesize non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts for water splitting. Nickel oxide and molybdenum carbide on activated carbon felt (Ni-Mo@ACF) exhibited remarkable catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), while NiFe alloy nanosheets on activated carbon felt (NiFe@ACF) showed excellent catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Assembling Ni-Mo@ACF as the cathode and NiFe@ACF as the anode resulted in an overall water splitter with a low cell voltage of 1.60V and excellent durability for 36 hours.

N. I. Villanueva-Martinez et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the feasibility of iron-doped manganese oxide combined with carbon nanofibers as a bifunctional catalyst for alkaline metal-air batteries. Our results demonstrate that the iron-doped MONW/CNF catalyst shows significantly enhanced catalytic activity for both the ORR and OER. The synthesized 5Fe-MONW/CNF catalyst exhibits excellent stability and a lower reversibility gap.

Simultaneously mastering operando strain and reconstruction effects via phase-segregation strategy for enhanced oxygen-evolving electrocatalysis

Daqin Guan et al.

Summary: In this study, a thermal-induced phase-segregation strategy was proposed to control both the material operando strain and reconstruction effects for enhanced oxygen-evolving reaction (OER). The self-assembled and controllable layered LiCoO2 phase and Co3O4 spinel were generated from the pristine Li2Co2O4 spinel, achieving controllable proportions of the two phases by the calcination temperature. The combined operando and ex-situ characterizations revealed the appearance of obvious tensile strain on the layered LixCoO2 phase during OER, while the low-valence Co3O4 phase transformed into high-valence CoOOHx, realizing simultaneous operando strain and reconstruction effects.

Carbon nanofiber-supported tantalum oxides as durable catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media

J. C. Ruiz-Cornejo et al.

Summary: In this study, tantalum based catalysts supported on carbon nanofibers (CNF) were investigated for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for the first time. It was found that the catalyst exhibited the best OER activity and oxygen efficiency when using highly graphitic CNF synthesized at 700 degrees C and annealed at 800 degrees C. The ordering degree of CNF and low oxygen content in tantalum oxides were crucial for promoting oxygen production. The most active catalyst also demonstrated excellent durability.
