Lung metastasectomy for osteosarcoma in children, adolescents, and young adults: proof of permanent cure

Ugo Pastorino et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the clinical benefit and potential cure rate of repeated lung metastasectomy in a pediatric population. The results showed that repeated lung metastasectomy can achieve a permanent cure when offered to properly selected patients with metastases from osteosarcoma.

Prognostic significance of the ratio of surgically resected to radiologically detected lung nodules in patients with metastatic osteosarcoma

Gehad Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prognostic value of the ratio of surgically resected to radiologically detected osteosarcoma lung nodules (SR/RD) in patients with metastatic osteosarcoma who underwent metastasectomy. The study found that a high SR/RD ratio greater than 1 and poor tumor necrosis were significantly associated with poor survival in these patients.

Thoracoscopy vs thoracotomy for the management of metastatic osteosarcoma: A Pediatric Surgical Oncology Research Collaborative Study

Timothy B. Lautz et al.

Summary: This study compared overall survival and pulmonary disease-free survival in children with osteosarcoma undergoing thoracotomy versus thoracoscopic surgery for pulmonary metastasectomy, finding no significant difference in 5-year survival rates. While a thoracoscopic approach may pose higher mortality risk compared to thoracotomy in general, it showed comparable outcomes in patients with limited pulmonary disease burden.

What Effect Do Pulmonary Micronodules Detected at Presentation in Patients with Osteosarcoma Have on 5-Year Overall Survival?

Reid Davison et al.

Summary: For osteosarcoma patients, the presence of lung micronodules <5 mm at diagnosis does not impact 5-year overall survival compared to patients without nodules. Patients with 0 or 1 nodule have a higher survival rate compared to those with >= 2 nodules. These findings suggest that surgery may not be necessary for small nodules <5 mm and these patients behave more like localized rather than metastatic cases.
