Breast and Lung Cancer Screening Among Medicare Enrollees During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Christopher Doan et al.

Summary: Several studies have shown that breast cancer screening and low-dose computed tomographic screening for lung cancer decreased sharply during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, but returned to normal or near-normal levels in the summer of 2020. This retrospective cohort study aimed to determine the observed vs expected rates of mammography and low-dose computed tomographic scans from the beginning of the pandemic through April 2022. The findings indicate that despite improvements in the pandemic situation, the screening rates remained below expected levels.

Breast cancer screening during the COVID-19 pandemic: moving from disparities to health equity

Ilana Richman et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has severely disrupted routine healthcare in the United States, including the complete halt of screening mammography and the emergence of disparities in screening rates across different populations. These disparities can be attributed to various structural and contextual factors, with strategies to close the gaps requiring a multifaceted approach that addresses both healthcare systems/practices and policy-level measures. Addressing health disparities necessitates comprehensive solutions that tackle the complex conditions leading to disparities.
