Sex chromosome and gonadal hormone contributions to binge-like and aversion-resistant ethanol drinking behaviors in Four Core Genotypes mice

Elizabeth A. A. Sneddon et al.

Summary: Research suggests that sex chromosomes play a role in regulating ethanol consumption, preference, and aversion resistance in mice, and sex chromosome complement may be an important contributor to alcohol drinking behaviors.

Sex differences in neuronal activation during aversion-resistant alcohol consumption

Miranda. E. E. Arnold et al.

Summary: This study found that female mice are less able to suppress alcohol intake when the alcohol solution is adulterated with quinine compared to male mice. Examination of neuronal activation in the brain revealed sex differences in activation patterns, with males showing higher activation in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, posterior insular cortex, and ventral tegmental area during quinine-adulterated alcohol consumption, while females exhibited higher activation in the ventral tegmental area. These findings suggest the existence of sex differences in neurocircuitry that may underlie compulsive drinking behaviors.

Sex Differences in the Brain Transcriptome Related to Alcohol Effects and Alcohol Use Disorder

Robert Hitzemann et al.

Summary: There is compelling evidence that sex and gender differences play a crucial role in excessive alcohol consumption, particularly in neuroimmune processes. Studies have shown significant transcriptional differences between males and females, especially in the extended amygdala and nucleus accumbens. Even phenotypically similar males and females in animal models show significant differences at the transcriptome level.

Impact of Adolescent Intermittent Ethanol Exposure on Social Investigation, Social Preference, and Neuronal Activation in cFos-LacZ Male and Female Rats

Trevor T. Towner et al.

Summary: Adolescence is a sensitive developmental period during which alcohol use can lead to long-term social impairments, particularly in males. However, the neuronal underpinnings for this sex-specific effect are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate whether social anxiety-like alterations in adolescent male rats following intermittent ethanol exposure are accompanied by changes in neuronal activation in brain regions associated with social behavior. The results suggest that AIE produces sex-specific social impairments potentially driven by differential neuronal activation states in specific brain regions.

Alcohol solution strength preference predicts compulsive-like drinking behavior in rats

Jerome C. Foo et al.

Summary: By studying alcohol-addicted rats, this research has found associations between compulsive-like drinking behavior and individual drinking patterns and solution preference. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of drinking problems.

The changing alcohol drinking patterns among older adults show that women are closing the gender gap in more frequent drinking: the Tromso study, 1994-2016

Line Tegner Stelander et al.

Summary: Alcohol consumption among older adults in Norway has significantly increased in terms of frequency and quantity from 1996 to 2016, especially among women. The gap in frequent drinking between women and men has notably narrowed.

Females develop features of an addiction-like phenotype sooner during withdrawal than males

Eleanor Blair Towers et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine whether two key features of addiction in humans, an enhanced motivation for cocaine and compulsive use, emerge sooner during withdrawal from extended access cocaine self-administration in females versus males using a rat model. The results showed that female rats developed addiction-like features sooner during withdrawal than male rats, indicating that the telescoping effect observed in humans is biologically based. Additionally, motivation for cocaine and measures of compulsive use incubate over withdrawal, showing similarities to drug-seeking/craving behaviors.

Adverse social experiences in adolescent rats result in persistent sex-dependent effects on alcohol-seeking behavior

Akseli Surakka et al.

Summary: Research indicates that adolescent adverse social experiences have long-lasting sex-dependent effects on alcohol-seeking behavior in adult rats, with females showing increased reinstatement effects and males demonstrating decreased effects. Additionally, sex differences were observed in locomotor activity and reward sensitivity to sucrose.
