Prenatal Choline Supplement in a Maternal Obesity Model Modulates Offspring Hepatic Lipidomes

Hunter W. Korsmo et al.

Summary: Maternal obesity during pregnancy has negative effects on offspring health, increasing the risk of metabolic diseases such as MAFLD. Choline, an important nutrient involved in lipid metabolism, is compromised in MAFLD. This study investigated how maternal choline supplementation influenced the hepatic lipidome of mouse offspring under obesogenic feeding. The results show that maternal choline supplementation increased the abundance of plasmalogens, a subclass of phospholipids, in the liver of offspring. This protective response may help mitigate the damages caused by high-fat feeding.

Population-based plasma lipidomics reveals developmental changes in metabolism and signatures of obesity risk: a mother-offspring cohort study

Sartaj Ahmad Mir et al.

Summary: This study provides comprehensive insights into the changes in lipid levels during pregnancy and early childhood, as well as their association with obesity risk. The findings suggest that the lipidomic profiles in pregnant and non-pregnant women, as well as in offspring at birth and at 6 years of age, are influenced by adiposity. The study also highlights the overlap in the circulating lipid phenotype of obesity risk between children and adults, with a larger number of lipids associated with BMI in adults.

Preconceptional Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplementation in 2 Low-Resource Countries Results in Distinctly Different IGF-1/mTOR Placental Responses

Marisol Castillo-Castrejon et al.

Summary: The study found that preconceptional small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplementation (SQLNS) improved placental mTOR and IGF-1 signaling and fetal growth in Pakistani pregnant women with poor nutritional status. However, the same intervention did not activate placental nutrient-sensing pathways in Guatemalan women and only improved placental function and fetal growth in the context of poor maternal nutrition in populations experiencing childhood stunting.

Selective morphological and volumetric alterations in the hippocampus of children exposed in utero to gestational diabetes mellitus

Kirsten M. Lynch et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that prenatal exposure to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is linked to an increased risk for neurodevelopmental disorders. This study explored the impact of GDM exposure on hippocampal morphology in children, revealing reduced radial thickness in the left inferior body of the hippocampus and reduced volume in the right CA1 subfield in boys. These findings suggest that GDM exposure may have sex-specific effects on hippocampal structure during childhood.

Summary: Males prioritize growth pathways to maximize reproductive success from infancy to adulthood, which may make them less adaptable to in-utero environment shifts. Females, on the other hand, are more adaptable to changes in utero environment but at the cost of growth, reducing the risk of certain poor outcomes.
