Prevalence and Correlates of Cardiovascular Calcification and Its Prognostic Effects Among Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease: Results From the C-STRIDE Study

Lan Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the characteristics, risk factors, and prognosis of cardiovascular calcification in patients with CKD stages 1-4. The results showed that demographic and traditional cardiovascular risk factors were associated with cardiovascular calcification, especially AAC. AAC may be associated with an increased risk of death in CKD patients, while CVC may only be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in patients with mild to moderate CKD.

Epidemiology of chronic kidney disease: an update 2022

Csaba P. Kovesdy

Summary: Chronic kidney disease affects over 800 million individuals worldwide, especially prevalent in older individuals, women, racial minorities, and people with diabetes and hypertension. It has become a major cause of mortality globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

Association of Coronary Calcium, Carotid Wall Thickness, and Carotid Plaque Progression With Low-Density Lipoprotein and High-Density Lipoprotein Particle Concentration Measured by Ion Mobility (From Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis [MESA])

Indre Ceponiene et al.

Summary: Through the study, it was found that LDL-P measured by ion mobility was significantly associated with CAC progression and carotid plaque progression in the MESA cohort. After adjusting for established risk factors and traditional lipids, medium and very small LDL-P remained associated with CAC progression, and very small LDL-P was associated with carotid plaque progression.

Vascular pathologies in chronic kidney disease: pathophysiological mechanisms and novel therapeutic approaches

Philip Duesing et al.

Summary: CKD and CVD are interlinked, with CKD increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease mainly due to accumulation of uremic toxins, chronic inflammation, and oxidative stress. Vascular alterations, especially atherosclerosis and vascular calcification, play a significant role in the association between CKD and cardiovascular mortality.

Role of GDF-15, YKL-40 and MMP 9 in patients with end-stage kidney disease: focus on sex-specific associations with vascular outcomes and all-cause mortality

Agne Laucyte-Cibulskiene et al.

Summary: This study explores the sex-specific relationships between novel CVD biomarkers and vascular aging in CKD patients. The findings suggest that GDF-15 is related to TMAO in females and vascular calcification and inflammation in males, while YKL-40 is associated with all-cause mortality in males. Sex differences were observed in the associations between biomarkers and comorbidities.

Gender-Related Differences in Chronic Kidney Disease-Associated Vascular Calcification Risk and Potential Risk Mediators: A Scoping Review

Patrick Yihong Wu et al.

Summary: Vascular calcification is more common in elderly individuals, diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease patients. Gender differences exist in the risk of CKD-associated VC, with males generally showing a higher risk, although there is significant heterogeneity in research findings. Various factors such as assessment methods, sample size, and biological mediators may contribute to these gender-related differences.
